View Full Version : Brad's 98 Disco build

Brad

Yes! You read that right! After trail clean up I ran to Frisco to buy another Discovery.
The skinny:
1998 Disco LSE
owner said the motor blew on crow hill, however today he mentioned he only noticed coolant. I still need to investigate the engine damage. May just be head gaskets may be a engine. Jeff has a engine for it if need be but it is a couple months down the project list before we can get to it. Hopefully it's just head gaskets.

Has a terra firma big bore lift just like my 95, wrangler dura tracks with 500 miles on them. Has heated leather seats, rear A/C, land rover rubber mats throughout, 165k miles.

Pics!

plans: make it a nice weekend rig to go out in, it will also be the primary tow rig for the pop up camper.

Nice, Brad. Was it pricier than your current rig, or did you get another screaming deal?

Brad
October 27th, 2013, 12:04 AM
It was waaay more expensive. $750. :D

$750!?! :thumb: You didn't even fully pay for the lift and tires.

Brad
October 28th, 2013, 01:30 PM
He said he just spent $1k on the tires, lift is about 2 years old. I confirmed today he blew out the block, cyl 8. Needs a engine. Which is for the better anyway, I can get it resealed and ready ahead of time.

And so it begins:
plans changed. Putting in a 4.6l engine instead. Extra horsepower for towing.

How much are you paying the shop to do the swap?.

Brad

Rover 4.6.
nothing Jed! I work at JC's British 4x4 as a tech.

Rover 4.6.

Dont know that much about the Rover. How much different is it from the Ford ??

Brad
January 7th, 2014, 09:37 AM
Rover engines are loosely based on 60's Buick V8 engines.

Who can spot the problem with this picture?

There is your prob. right there you do not have an oil pan! :lmao: Spun bearing? What chewed the edge of the crank? Is that a hole in the block?

Brad

Could also be the hole in the block! :D

I removed the 2 rods for cylinder 7 and 8. The rest was in the oil pan when I dropped it.

Or an "original oil" engine! Was there a hole anywhere in the block, 'cause it sure looks like there should be.

Brad
January 9th, 2014, 07:42 AM
Yep! Look at post 18. :thumb:

And I should clarify, I rotated the engine the 10 degrees or so it would move as Jeff worked the rods loose. They were twisted around the Crank. I found the problem as to why, there was a thick goo sucked up into the oil pickup tube causing this to happen. Almost looked like a sealant.

So much for those 30,000 mile oil changes...(oil change?)

Were those two pistons seized?

Brad
January 12th, 2014, 10:54 PM
Bearing failure plus the oil starvation caused the rods to break away from the pistons. We figured out the goo was the rubberized coating from the underside of the valley pan gasket. Somehow it delaminated and slipped past the cam and into the oil pan. Pretty crazy stuff. I am glad we figured it out as I was worried it might have been a cooling issue.

Been cruising along on the engine build!
Cleaned up the timing cover (yes, that's clean, it was completely covered in oil and muck)

Reconditioned the heads with fresh valve guide seals, lapped the valves, had to replace 2 valves due to the impact damage.

Keeping both! One overlanding rig and one tow/weekender rig. Towing for the pop up camper.

We have been a bit slow this week so had extra time on my hands.
The goal to put this:

Glad to see you conquered that engine problem. I can relate to seeing in the dark with the lights out on the controls, the Bronco has no dash lights at all except some little green light thingy the PO wired up that is working like a strobe light when you drive but once you stop its on steady, LOL.

Sometimes you have to resort to old hot rod techniques. The brand new motor mount I put in broke under the torque while 4 wheeling in Moab. Jeff my awesome boss helped me rig up this solution after I replaced the mount.

I have also heard of guys using chain to do something similar. I guess this was popular in the 60's and 70's with the drag race guys. They were breaking mounts on the one side and this was more of a safety thing than anything.

I have had great luck in the past just using old pucks and all thread. Gonna do that to mine soon. After how long they have lasted in others I've done them to, I'd be foolish to go back to a factory mount.
