So you're walking down the street, minding your business, and a stranger decides to throw a punch to try to knock you out. To them, it's some sort of "game". Crazy.

Gotta be pretty tough to walk up behind a girl and punch her in the head or punch an unsuspecting person walking down the street. Try it on my block.

Yea, but it happens so quick that there's close to no reaction time. We humans don't have that split second intake/process/decide/take action capability. It seems, to me, the primary protection is physical space and to keep others out of it (not much help when hijacked from behind).

That's my point, you better succeed, or someone is going to react. I am betting one of these kids is going to wind up dead.

"It's a macho thing" according to the statement at the end of the clip... Really? Those kids need to learn the definition of the word. And they need to get their butts involved in something productive. I bet a lot of these kids will end up at the wrong end of a gun.

Watching that really gets the bloods boil'in, real tough attacking defenseless and unsuspecting individuals. I may not be in my 20's anymore and a little out of shape but let one of those punks try and do that face to face.

I just came home from a chili cook-off (fundraiser event) hosted by the American Legion Hall near my home in Westminster. All of the proceeds are going to help a family whose house was set on fire by some random 13 yr. old kid who, for whatever reason, decided to crawl through a "doggie door" and set a house on fire. The family escaped unharmed, but their dog... Nope. Not so lucky.
At the event this afternoon, the victims spoke of how they literally had only 3 minutes to get out of the house. They have two little boys, 3 and 5 yrs. old with no connection to the fire-starter.
The Westminster Fire Department did a great job of saving the home (exterior at least) and showed up to the event in full force.
I don't know anything about these "I dare-ya" games, but this is just crazy stuff going on...

Lousy or no parenting is the root of this sh-t, basically it comes down to lack of fathers in the kids lives. 99% of these kids are boys who have no male role model and are left on their own to define what it means to be a man. Unfortunately they come up with "I'm a man which means I'm not a woman who's loving, caring, nurturing, non-violent, etc." and define themselves by doing the opposite.
That and finding a "family" which turns out to be others just like themselves. :frown:

The dark side to "social networking" communication capabilities - while good things can spread quick and wide, the bad, sadly, do as well. Flash mobs used to be getting together and impromptu dance shows and now are for theft.

You're absolutely right about that , Chris. The root of the problem is lack of parenting. But I will disagree to some extent when you define the gender of the parent that sticks around. I have 2 girls and admittedly do most of the "girl talk" with them, but if I wasn't here... Britton could and WOULD do it. Also If I had a boy, I know Britton would do most of the "man" talk. But if he wasn't there... I could and would do it.
These kids need an outlet to express themselves. The parent(s) need to do whatever it takes to get them involved in sports or good clubs where they can burn off the energy and learn something else along the way.

To sway the thread...
So a debate might be does a society curb communication so an idea does not get abused by those who would do ill or does a society have free communication - let the seed fall on fertile and sterile ground alike - and deal with the bad along with the good?
Aside from the above thought, this came up in a different arena...

Yes, it is too harsh. I thought about posting it earlier today but declined.
I don't promote the action though the idea is there (don't think about hurting me or my loved ones as I'll hurt you). Undesirable, any way about it, this whole thread.

The reality is there's little good on the news aside from the occasional feel-good story. We all know the news chosen to be shown - school bus crash in Mississippi, boat capsizes in the Gulf, carjacking in LA, bank robbery in Pennsylvania, NY kids come up with a new game, etc. Sure those may be news in that locality but hardly country wide. Its pretty much bad news around the country to sensationalize our violent culture and scare people. It's no wonder the older generations think we are going to hell in a hand basket when they watch and listen and read that all day long. IMHO news should relate to the audience on local issues and not the minor tragedies around the country.

I think the underlying problem is liberal society as a whole. We're no longer able to discipline our kids without fear of legal retribution, instead we 're to have a discussion with our 3yr old about how what he/she is doing is wrong. There is no push to succeed or excel at anything, all you have to do is show up and "participate" and your given the trophy/accolades. This however does nothing to satisfy any desire to triumph at something. Apparently if you do perform exceptionally at a competitive sport then you're denounced for bullying. There is absolutely no respect for your elders anymore with the younger generations, instead there is a belief that once you're a teenager you are suddenly master of your life and able to do what you want. We've gotten soft as a society and that's what is allowing stupid **** like this to happen. And yes, I have no doubt that if I were to be on the receiving end of this "game" and were to retaliate they would put me out there as some PTSD crazed war vet and side with the pink arse who tried knocking me out. It's ridiculous.

I agree with your first part sense I see it all the time. Teenagers may think that they are the above everyone else but I'm pretty sure that's how it goes with every generation it's how teenagers are. The older generations look down on my generation and assume if you see us doing anything or enjoying ourselves we are doing something harmful to society. Even though most kids do not participate in things that are illegal or being menaces to society. I'd like to see them not publicize this too much cause my generation thrives off media attention. Kids will see this getting attention and people will go off and do this to be on TV and other mass media. Just my opinion. I'm not promoting this in any way but don't judge a group of people by the actions a few.

just as posted before if there is no reaction time it will not help much. Maybe just need to react accordingly if you witness this happen, like detain the attacker or....
However you would most likely be in jail if you shot someone attacking another don't you think?

I am not a lawyer, these are simply my thoughts and questions.
I believe there is a difference between stopping a threat that is endangering your own life and stopping a threat that is endangering the life of another. What distinction there might be between family / friend / acquaintance / stranger could be a legal issue as well. I'd like to think that protecting the life of a stranger would be as justified as would ones' own life. There may also be difference between criminal law and civil law.
Anyone know the legal stance for Colorado?
I have been to two different classes. One was NRA sanctioned and the other was via Rocky Mountain Gun Owners. While both classes were good, and I'm glad I took both, each had a different flavor. The NRA class was more wholistic while the RMGO class was heavy on legal issues.
Here are a couple specific links for RMGO:

EDIT: The "Don't Talk To Police" [without YOUR lawyer present] video on the above link (48 minutes) is excellent. Everyone, tool carrying or not, should watch it (you do not need to watch it - just listen to it background while you do some desk work).

I do wonder if people don't help because they are afraid, don't know how to help, or don't care? I would like to think it's not because they don't care but I may be naive

Kid in Lancing Michigan was shot the other day playing this. Him and a group of friends tried to knock out a man at a bus stop with his daughter. He didn't knock out the man, which the man next took out his pistol and shot the kid twice. The kid now has 1 year in prison.

He's lucky that guy only shot him twice; with his daughter adding to the fear / possibilities of the moment I'm surprised he had that level of self control.
