I have a MOLLE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOLLE) fetish. I have the Smittybilt GEAR seat covers and they work great. I need more storage though. It is already at a premium in my 3rd gen 4runner. My thought is to pick up some molle panels, or make some my self(My mom), and hang them from my headliner. Headliner seems well attached, and in good condition. I would not be hanging anything heavy, less than 10 lbs. Can a headliner take that, and bouncing around? Any ideas on how to secure it, screws?
Thanks

I spent 5 years in the auto upholstery industry and I'd say no. The headliner backing is hard foam or possibly soft fiberglass. The backing isn't solid enough to hold any kind of fasteners for any long period of time.

A former member had a nice setup taking advantage of the inside of the roof. It was a 4th gen like mine and as I remember it he used a net connected to the rear corners and grab bars by the rear doors. You might be able to find some pics - his username was racing616 ( or something close to that)

Well I am glad I asked. how about the plastic pillars and roof trim? I need to do some reading about auto interiors I guess.
Thanks

you could pull the headliner down and do some sort of JB weld attachment on the roof supports. then just pop them through the headliner. or you could even keep them flush under the headliner and just have some small holes instead of large holes.

honestly have never seen that rig without a headliner, so i may be off base. but im sure theres something available to attach to, that is not the roof itself. would be simple to use some 1/2" EMT and splay the bottom end so you have 4-6 "tabs" for roof attachment. for the headliner side, a simple welded nut would suffice.

a lot of work, but it would be slick if done right!

also, you can do the rear window storage mod. get some wire shelving and some tabs. attach it at the inner most portion of the window trim. leaves a few inches of space for coats, blankets, etc. otherwise unused space. ive seen a few that add molle bags, like the first aid type, to the rack. just fold it down and access the contents.

I guess those rear windows are useless anyways. Something to think about there. Is that your setup?

negative. borrowed from Expo. its on the to do list though. my only add on at the moment is a wire shelf hanging from the cargo ties. 48" wide, 16" deep, bout 4" from the headliner.
