Tibus off road (http://www.killeraxles.com/html/welcome.html), out of Germany, makes some portal axles that might be worth a thought. I do not want a massive lift, but ground clearance is great. These portals give 5", with minimal raising of center of gravity. These are also geared to 16:1, so smaller tires, around 33" are doable as well as highway speeds.
Not cheap by any means, but to get 5" of ground clearance you would need 10" larger tires. And for me to do that, I need a SAS, Big lift, new gearing, etc...
What do you guys think?

Talking out of my @ss but I suspect that by the time you get them shipped you'd have spent enough to buy a well-built truck locally.

i think you miss the fact that with these, a sas is required. and a low lift sas is not the easiest thing to accomplish, which turns into $$$$.
cool idea, superfluous at best.
to stay toyota, low height, lots of ground clearance, run an fj80 front axle with spacers to match the rear. have a competent shop install it at the lowest height possible, and then adapt to the new height.

Tibus is supposedly finishing a Toyota ifs portal.
And with being cheaper to find a rig local, maybe. But to gain 5" of ground clearance with my current rig, which is the point here, I would have to run a 42"tire. Never priced those but, my 32" tires were 1200 installed, so I imagine 3k+? To do that I need +8" of lift to clear said 42" tires. On an ifs toyota, that requires a sas or some massive custom suspension work. Lets say I do the sas my self with junkyard parts with a borrowed welding setup, around 400 for parts. Lets also play cheap with some leaf sprung set up with some body lift, maybe 500? And I consider going from coils all around to leafs a down grade, so some massive coil overs from toyotec are in order. Thats 2000ish.
so
$3000
$900 or 2k+
total 3900-5k.
And rigs that have all that are not cheap.
Or the portals shipped from Germany
3500 + shipping, 1k?
Neither is cheap, but if I had the cash, Portals all the way.

I completely agree with portals, That would rock !!
But,, If ya trim the fenders and run bigger tires ??

i hear all of that, and the ifs add on is cool. but that is A LOT of extra stress the engineerds didnt account for. id be very weary. but if you pull the trigger, ill bring the tools!

I remember from your intro that you said your rig has "quarter million miles", not to say the 3.4 can't or won't reach another 100k with out a rebuild, but I'd either save up or put my cash in the the power plant and that wierd looking thing behind it first before portals. And even before a common sas
I do agree with your math and your whole idea if you do end up going that rought I'd like to lend a hand if I can.

I also agree that tossing those on a otherwise stock rig would be a sweet way to go, but I think you pricing is off by a zero or two. Just to add to your "built rig to equal ground clearance list", you left some other stuff out with going with 42" tires, that being that a Toyota axle doesn't really handle that size of tire even with Chormoly shafts and all the strength add on's, so its really going to need 9"/Dana 60 sized axles on top of all that stuff you listed, so add that and stuff like beefier t-case and lots of other supporting mods.
If those are truly bolt on, that is an incredible setup that is worth $3500 all day long, but sadly I think that price is per corner, so you are looking at upwards of $14k assuming all you need is just the portal units and nothing else. A quick search turned up a thread on IH8MUD, where someone contacted them for pricing and they were $10,500 Euro's for a full set, which is $14,284 USD at today's exchange rate. You DEFINITELY can get a fully built rig on 37-40" tires for that kind of money, and while it might have a few inches less clearance, its more then enough for any trail out there really. I've seen Tow Rig/Tube Buggy combo's for about that price a few times.
Sorry to be the party pooper. Those would definitely be on my "money is no consequence" list though, so I'll file it away for when I make it big.

$3500 includes all four. Minor welding, one piece per axle.
On my list of stuff I will never be able to afford, is the solution to the tired 3.4. Diesel swap.
I am a college student, so this stuff is all YEARS out. At least.
But serious, what would be better than a 3rd gen 4r with a cummins qsb 3.3, and portals? A unimog yes, but good lord are they large.
And all of this would be done with replaced IFS problem children, ie. the CVs etc....
My main concern would be heat. They say they are capable of high way speed for extended periods, but thats got to build some heat. They also have an option for central tire inflation.

That price isn't bad if they're good quality and would be very cool. I wonder what "highway speed" means?

They are German, so I assume that means 100mph+
