There was an entire article about these in the January 2014 issue of FourWheeler. Good info for those who have no idea what it is all about.

Here are a few of mine...
A couple of Losi Micro crawlers I built

My Losi Mini Crawler

I also have a Losi Mini pro, running a brushless motor set up...
My Axial AX-10 bronco scaler (I built this while I was going through my divorce) I built the interior, cage from scratch, and then added the hop up....

The winch actually works as well. its a fun hobby, but can get expensive real quick.

i know u can make em just have front wheel drive at a flick of a switch me and my brother are just getting into it . spent forever tuneing his shocks to where we like em. Ill get one this next month still on the fence thinking either a deadbolt, honcho, maybe....... a wraith but i guess they need alot of work straight out of the box. and then maybe this spring we can set up a rc trail run ;) lol.

Go over to here http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/index.php
Tons of info on all the crawlers. Im wanting the new G-Made Sawback (old willy's scaler). I have a Samurai body I think would fit pretty good on it
as far as the high/low, none of mine have that (just the difference in what the motor does). Some do though as well as different speed transmissions. They can get pretty pricey. Shocks, tires, bodies, different electronics/motors, lockers, winches, scale accessories, LiPo batteries, etc. It adds up quick. The RC's give me a chance to do some small scale crawling when I cant take the 1:1's out.
Thanks for the like on the Bronco. I enjoyed building it and my son is always wanting to drive it. he has a Losi Micro crawler that he really enjoys to crawl things around the house (they are about 1/24th scale, think model cars size)

Check out MHOR(Mile high off road) in Aurora for all of your RC needs. The have a good stocked hobby shop, a indoor 10th scale track and I think they just built a crawler course.

I've got a bunch too. a 1.9 XJ build, 3 micro's, a losi mini, had a RC4WD Timber Wolf, did comp rigs back when it was a new thing and the AX10 was the only thing on the market. Oh,I also hunted down an original Tamiya Bruiser, it's more of a shelf queen though.
I've got 1/8 scale nitros too, and a truggy revo with a CF chassis n' all the goodies.
Of course I haven't touched them in far too long. They were too expensive to recoup any of my money from so I hold onto them. One day I'll mess with them again. Especially with all the room I have in my back yard now. I could top out an 1/8 scale truggy and I've even got a creek to cross for the crawlers. It would be fun. Shoot, I could probably host events at my house.

Hmmm.... what would 2 pounds of added vehicle weight do for traction and momentum when it pushes into a pile...

These things are bad ass. The Crawl Space is near my house. That place is always packed with people. Looks like fun.
