I've been up that road quite a few times hiking, skiing, climbing etc....can't recall ever noticing it before. Of course, most of the morning we head up its still dark, and probably too exhausted on the way back to notice.

You might not have noticed it as that road is terrible and you had other things on your mind. It's almost as bad as Zapata Falls. Only a few turns up I stopped to air down. `went to 15 PSI and I should have gone down to high single digits (6 PSI for Zapata Falls road)

Google Map (https://www.google.com/maps/place/39%C2%B040'18.5%22N+105%C2%B047'45.3%22W/@39.671794,-105.7964585,191m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d39.6 717928!4d-105.79591)

I need to get back up there. I found out last night that I should have walked around the old mine area (south of the trailhead) a bit more. There's a tunnel into the mountain (Google Map (https://www.google.com/maps/place/39%C2%B039'22.8%22N+105%C2%B047'02.2%22W/@39.656323,-105.7844995,191m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d39.6 563219!4d-105.7839507)). It's likely barred/locked - but it'd be nice to see in person. I also wish to trek up "the other road" (319 / Stevens Gulch). I was getting low on fuel and skipped it.

Hmmm - surprised this query wasn't filled.

Any hint?

In related news, I came to post this:

It's listed as "Silverton Colo"

I'd like to know GPS coords of the cabin.

Kebler Pass?

Tom

Kebler Pass?
Nope Kebler pass is a graded well maintained dirt county road. And that's not Crested Butte mtn.

That could (my photo) be Mt Huron on the right with Crestone Needle 2nd from front center and Crestone peak behind. That would put it just north of the Sand Dunes. There is a jeep trail I know goes north out of the dunes. I hiked it years ago. (1973ish)

That would make the four center peaks: Broken Hand, Crestone Needle, Crestone Peak, and Kit Carson.

They don't quite look right to me though.

Jim

Did you take the photo?

I went searching for the largest Aspen groves / clones in Colorado. Kebler Pass keeps coming up. This article (https://gazette.com/woodmenedition/although-utah-has-claim-to-the-largest-aspen-clone-it-could-be-in-colorado/article_0ba6e9ac-e16d-11e9-94cd-ebf67b65705d.html) mentioned a land form called "the Dyke". Searching for it - I find such an item near Kebler Pass (Google Map (https://www.google.com/maps/place/The+Dyke/@38.8816635,-107.1354903,3243m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x8740653b0ba14be5:0x 837e2217e857d5ae!2sThe+Dyke!3b1!8m2!3d38.8824923!4 d-107.1339378!3m4!1s0x8740653b0ba14be5:0x837e2217e85 7d5ae!8m2!3d38.8824923!4d-107.1339378)). Photos of the Dyke (https://www.google.com/search?q=%22the+dyke%22+near+kebler+pass&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjigoClgrP0AhWsnGoFHbUUDx0Q_AUoAnoECAEQB A&biw=1468&bih=873&dpr=1#imgrc=3MrF3N0pUEaVeM) do not look to match the ridge / peak / mountain in your photo.

Now to search the names you mention...

When you mentioned "north" and "Sand dunes" my mind went to the sand dunes up north near Walden. Searching on Crestone Needle - I'm seeing stuff WAY down south and needed to switch mental gears LOL

Would Medano Pass win a prize?

I see Old South Colony Lakes Trailhead south of Medano Pass (east side of the range) but that does not look to go up-n-over.

Oops. We are talking about different photos. The one you are talking about is the anthracite range off kebler pass.

I have been talking about the Silverton photo with the old cabin you posted with no responses. I posted another angle of the same cabin in response yours. That is the one I was saying could be N of the san dunes, huron, crestone needle etc.

I knew your photo was not Kebler pass, so I started thinking somewhere other than Silverton. Out of the box it looked a bit like the area N of the San Dune with the peaks I mentioned. Sorry for the confusion.

No worries - your photo hadn't been answered so I was jumping back to be complete.

The mountain shack, from where I found it, said it was Silverton. I assume the statement to be correct but have no proof of it.

Happy Thanksgiving!! `heading to the grocery store for goodies...

I want that cabin!

Many of us would!

Here's one we can actually have "for a weekend or so" - the Bonnie Belle Cabin (rental)

About one mile due south from the Animas Forks townsite - up on the mountain.

Take the road northeast out of Silverton...

Pandora ... I think it's been photoshopped or similar...building looks to be the crystal mill

Jim
September 30th, 2022, 05:51 PM
James has it. It is photoshoped. It is the crystal mill - but the photoshoper mirrored the mill image (compare the boards in the windows/doors). The rocks / vegitation, to me, says China.

yup...add it to the list. IIRC the champion mill is the largest still standing old mining structure in Colo. The property is still privately owned and you are not technically allowed to go poke around it. The trail also technically ends (according to the MVUM) at the mill, but the trail is well developed and used continuing on up to the mine - which is quite a ways up high and above the mill. The more interesting wheeling is also above the mill, but its still pretty much moderate at most. Way down below the mill, actually not particularly far up from the trailhead, is a fork to the Iron Mike Mine - there is definitely one serious obstacle there at the creek crossing. That spot is full on big rock chunks - we got 4 old built cjs through it, but they all were traction devices front and rear. I didn't even try it with the open front. It also bent a tie-rod and left some paint in a couple spots on those who did. It does have a permanent man-made anchor point in the rocks above it to winch from. Beyond that, the trail is mellow again. I'd go back and just winch through it and continue on.

When I first started wheeling I just went wherever the groups posted for their meets online, including this group/site.

Now that I live in Leadville, in addition to that, I just went out exploring by myself. I look at a map for areas I haven't explored yet, and usually stumble upon more trails I wouldn't have found without just looking.
