View Full Version : My New Whip (Not 4x4, but flower power 1966 VW Bug)

I picked up a 1966 VW (45,000 orginal miles) Bug last night from the orginal owners family. It is the only year for the 1300 engine and is very clean shape. The floor boards and the body are not rusted out. It has it's orginal ruby red paint, which for 1966 is in great shape. It has been sitting, so I need to replace all of the fluids, adjust the valves, clean the carb, check the breaks, etc... to get it running and driving. Anybody know where to get a 6v battery for these?

NICE!!
So, it seems some work was recently tended as the fuel filter and perhaps lines look fresh, along with the air tubes. Did you drive it home or trailer it (is it running now)?

I trailered it, it is not running currently. I need a new battery and to change out the fluids.

Thanks Rick!
I called batteries Plus, they want $130. Hensley Battery is $92 and Napa is $96, both have them in stock :woot: I think I am going to get it from Napa, because it is closer to the house and open on the weekend.

Did this come from the same people that had the Ghia convertible? I stumbled on it on CL a week or so ago, and they mentioned in the ad the Bug in the garage was for sale as well. It said that it hadn't run in years.

I loved my old 63 Baja. Damn thing would go anywhere. What I couldn't clear in ground clearance, we jumped. That one looks to be in pretty good condition.

I have a brand new still in the box 6v Optima Red Top if you are interested. Think they retail around $150. Would let it go for $100. If interested, PM me

Those old VW 6V batteries are hard to find but I hear the coolant is really rare!
Cool car, nice find.

Yes it is, I went to look at and buy the Ghia. Because he had so much interest in the Ghia, he changed it to an auction style and I was outbid. The Ghia went for $5k.

Do you have the dimensions? I have not tested or charged the current battery, but because it has been sitting for so long, I am thinking it will need to be replaced.

Nice score, how are the heater tubes that run underneath the floor boards? I had a 1957 oval window and a 1973 super beetle . Good little cars.

So I got the bug running great :woot: I had to put a new battery, fuel pump, rebuild the carb, clean/adj. the points, and cleaned the spark plugs. After all of this, it still was not running right, I found that the previous owner had the spark plug wires in the wrong spot. Had two of them swaped, goes to show you can not trust what somebody else has done. Had to go back to basics, put it on comp. stroke on #1 then moved the wires to the right spot based off firing order. Made a huge diff., I am suprised it would even run the way it was. Set the timing with a timing gun and it fires right up with the turn of the key. I cleaned, washed and waxed it, came out great.

LOL - reminds me of my high school days... I was out (driving separately) at a suburban lake with a buddy (not too far from home) and I left early. I decided to open the hatch to his VW and swapped two or three plug wires at the distributor. A couple hours later I get a call from him to come fix his car - he was certain I messed with it (yep)...
Nice to hear yours is running well w/o major work!

That would do it lol! I was getting irritated with it, but figured it out. Once I looked at the firing order and then the plug wires it was pretty easy.

Nice little bug, i'm not sure how I missed this. My dad and I are currently in the process of restoring a 1972 VW supper beetle convertible. The list includes new fabric for the top and a new (higher power) ignition system. We own 2 but the other one is kind of the backup dd.
I really love the look of a stock bug! I hope it stays as stock as possible. A little bit of work and you will be sitting on a small gold mine! Especially with thoes older oval windows, people love those because of the wider wheel wells so that you can put some wider tires without all of the rubbing.
Are you planning on going to any vw car shows? VWs on the green is quite popular, so is "Bug In". NuVintage is where I go for all of my bug parts. The people in there are cool and know a thing about vws. They always carry the part I have needed.

Thank for the info. The 6v battery was a bit tough to find, but found that Carquest had one in stock. The fuel Pump came from Napa. It is really stock car and really clean pan and I really like those old bugs. My plan now is to sell it, I have too many cars and bought this as a project to sell. I prob. paid too much for it, but for a one owner, clean car, I hope it will pay for my time.

Nice guys, making me nostalgic!
I should see if my brother still has his split window model, IIRC it's a '53 and a window hung "air-conditioner."

well I wouldn't want to offend you, i don't have that kind of money right now. I was thinking you would be selling it a little later in the year. Good luck selling it, i'm sure it wont be on the market long in this condition!
