I'd heard nothing about this in the news but ran across an article about it online.
Seems the EPA has issued notice that it plans to reduce emissions from wood and pellet stoves.
Here is a link to the article:
http://www.thenewamerican.com/tech/e...-pellet-stoves (http://www.thenewamerican.com/tech/environment/item/17776-epa-wants-to-snuff-out-wood-and-pellet-stoves)
[begin excerpt from the article]
It took more than six weeks before the new EPA rules on wood and pellet stoves percolated into the media, which then generated pushback ranging from anger to outrage.
The new rules impose a maximum of fine airborne particulate emissions from 15 micrograms per cubic meter of air down to 12. As Larry Bell, writing at Forbes, put it:
"To put this amount in context ... secondhand tobacco smoke in a closed-car can expose a person to 3,000-4,000 micrograms of particulates per cubic meter."
That will virtually end the burning of wood for heat or cooking in the United States, according to Reg Kelly, the owner and operator of Earth Outdoor Furnaces in Mountain Grove, Missouri: “There’s not a stove in the United States that can pass the test right now — this is the death knell of any wood burning.”
[end article excerpt]
Link to .gov doc titled "OVERVIEW OF PROPOSED UPDATES TO AIR EMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW RESIDENTIAL WOOD HEATERS":

This webpage contains info & links on how to make comments on this proposed regulation. I have no idea if a citizen submitting a "no" opinion on something like this makes a damn bit of difference but it only takes a couple of minutes to do.

I'll read the link later but initially I don't put much credence in a website owned by the John Birch Society.

Mind if I ask why?
After reading the New American magazine for 20 years I find it to be extremely credible. You may not agree with its editorial slant, but you will have a tough time finding fault with the facts as reported.
The article quoted in the New American magazine is from the Forbes magazine - not known to be a far right wing outfit.
Links are provided to the EPA website on this issue. The EPA proposed rule on stoves is real.

Without this becoming a point of discussion I simply distrust anything the Koch Brothers (Fred is a founding member) have to say about anything.

As I said "I'll read the link later" which I should have been clearer about. I was referring to the EPA link.

A person should not implicitly trust anything he reads. That goes for progressive publications as well.
As one of my college profs was fond of saying:
"Everyone is entitled to his own opinions. No one is entitled to his own facts."

There Is No Way This Will Happen,
I hope you're right.
I'm about a year away from installing a wood burner in my house. Wanted to get some remodeling done first. This has got me worried that if I wait the new improved zero pollution wood burner will cost mega bucks.

Lived in MT for a number of years. Most of the state would be without heat if this passed.

Existing stoves are grandfathered in. New ones will affected if this rule is implemented.

Yup - the nanny state is gonna keep us all safe.
Makes me think of the song "mother" by Pink Floyd:
Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb?
Mother do you think they'll like this song?
Mother do you think they'll try to break my balls?
Mother should I build the wall?
Mother should I run for president?
Mother should I trust the government?
Mother will they put me in the firing line?
Mother am I really dying?
Hush now baby, baby, dont you cry.
Mother's gonna make all your nightmares come true.
Mother's gonna put all her fears into you.
Mother's gonna keep you right here under her wing.
She wont let you fly, but she might let you sing.
Mama will keep baby cozy and warm.
Ooooh baby ooooh baby oooooh baby,
Of course mama'll help to build the wall.
Mother do you think she's good enough -- to me?
Mother do you think she's dangerous -- to me?
Mother will she tear your little boy apart?
Mother will she break my heart?
Hush now baby, baby dont you cry.
Mama's gonna check out all your girlfriends for you.
Mama wont let anyone dirty get through.
Mama's gonna wait up until you get in.
Mama will always find out where you've been.
Mama's gonna keep baby healthy and clean.
Ooooh baby oooh baby oooh baby,
You'll always be baby to me.
Mother, did it need to be so high?

Honestly, that song makes me tear up... a lot of Floyd songs do in fact, one of my fav's for sure! Grew up on it in fact.
Back to this dilemma, actually "existing" ones are not out of the woods, pun intended, if our home owners insurance decides that they will not insure older stoves then we are f***ed. I had to send pic's of my stove and piping to my insurance for the underwriter, I had just redid the piping, but my old stove has lost the brick lining over time and may be a contention for the underwriter, I have not heard back yet. This thread hit my memory of this and now has me re thinking what I said. All may have to comply if the underwriters decide so, and we want to have coverage.

What a thought....a public/private partnership between the EPA and insurance industry.

I'm pretty sure it is reality! Insurance is one of the biggest rackets in our country, now Obamacare. Of course there is a public/private partnership between the 'government' and the insurance industry.

I had not thought about it that way but you are correct.
Yikes.
