Learned something new today about fords figured id share it. Back in the 60's ford came out with the 427 SOHC *also called the cammer* to compete with Chrysler's Hemi in NASCAR. They made about 500 of these motors to abide by NASCARS standards at the time but due to Chrysler protesting the engine it effectively got banned before it even hit the track. It was a bad engine with dual carbs it was putting out 650 ish hp at 7500 rpm. That to me is very impressive for a engine built in the 60's. They made a huge impact in the drag racing circuit at the time becoming a platform for the top fuel nitro dragsters. one of these engines is worth a small fortune i ve been looking online and been seeing prices from 20 to 40 grand.

Did not know the Cammer was a SOHC. That was like 30 years ahead of its time.

My grandpas friend has 2 of them sitting in his garage. To this day I'm still trying to get wrote into that will for those motors. That's a wicked timing chain when you really think about how long it has to be.

Look what just got posted: http://www.network54.com/Forum/74182/thread/1397407666/SOHC+in+a+junkyard
I have lurked on that board since 2000-ish; those guys have saved me a ton of money! I started reading to see if someone found a way to fit roller lifters on an FE. I learned that most of my pipe dreams would be wasted money since I don't go racing.

Around 50 years ago I had a '57 Ford Fairlane 2dr running a souped up Y-block with 3 dueces & Cadillac 4 speed hydro-stick. That low 1st gear really helped with launch. Passing by the local Ford dealer one day I spied a '63 Galaxy 500 with a gold emblem on the fender. Went back the next day at lunch with a friend for a test drive. The dealer had just rebuilt the engine, cammer, hi-rise dual quad, 4 speed with warranty. Beautiful car, dark green with white vinyl top, only a few thousand miles, perfect condition. We went for a test drive, salesman in back seat yacking away, went a few blocks, came to a wide intersection, floored it in 2nd, went around in the intersection 4 times. Really took some serious tread off the new Double Eagles, the sales guy was choking on the smoke. My friend & I were laughing so hard we were crying. I stopped & asked the guy if he was OK, he couldn't talk for a few minutes. I told him they needed to adjust the throttle, it was way too sensitive, someone might get hurt. Took it back to the lot & guy wants to make a deal. I told him I loved the car, price was right, but didn't think I could afford gas for it.

My '74 F-100 used to get 12 MPG on the highway. My old '64 T-Bird was lucky to get 9 MPG, but, it survived my driving. :D
