My 1990 XJ has a ton of play and I was thinking it was a bearing issue, but I came across this http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/loose-steering-column-repair-feels-like-tilt-broke-13641/ anybody done this procedure? How hard was it and how long did it take? Any advise?

Last year, I removed my column from the vehicle and repaired it on a bench. I did not have to tighten the bolts in the article, but I was not far from them. I think it took most of an afternoon because I took my time.

I have done tons of these. Make sure you pick up the tool (I cant remember what is called) to push the spring down while you put the last snap ring on. They are cheap at advanced or checker. Its pretty easy.

So tore into steering and found that my column is shot. Mine is a 1990 with tilt, does anybody know the years that will swap in? Does anyone have a extra column that will work? Thinking pull and save, any idea how much they go for?

How is it shot? They are mostly repairable.

Depending on your money situation, this may be an opportunity to upgrade a common issue on Cherokees with big tires.

The U-Pull has your column; should round up to $60.

When you walk in, ask for an interchange list. It will tell you what years and models interchange, and where to find the possible donors once you step into the yard.

It could be fixed but it is going to be faster and cheaper just to replace it with a JY column.

So I found a steering column out of a 87 xj for $60, which is a little more than u pull and pay, but this is complete and by the time U Pull and pay charge for all the different parts, it was a little cheaper. I got the column installed and it is soooo much better. I found that I could use a 87-90 Column and not have to do any electrical modification.
