View Full Version : Trail clean up and sign building

April 27th, 2014, 02:01 PM
Getting ready for our adopt a trail clean up runs. Wanted to get some input from my fellow members. We need to rebuild our sign for devils canyon and replace the stump in the ground with the new sign. I have been in touch with Brant and recently with his temporary replacement for this summer Nicholas with the clear creek USFS district. Brant has the specific brown paint we need to paint the sign. Our obligation falls on rebuilding including the cost of materials. I am more than happy to pitch in on materials however, sign building is not my forte. Questions I want to ask:

1. Is there anyone who has all the tools and a space to meet up and build a new sign?
2. Is there any interest in others pitching in money for supplies? (If need be I will gladly buy all the materials)

some things to note:

The sign must be built the same as the old sign per Brant, this is for uniform USFS standards. Hence the paint Nicholas or he will be providing.

I should be able to make new laminated signs to attach to the new display.

Brant asked that we not perform trail maintenance due to flood damage. Rather asked that we take a few photos of the damage and get GPS coordinates to report back.

Additionally I am aiming for June 21st as trail clean up.

our old sign from devils canyon:

Brad - I have all the tools and should be able to re-produce that sign. I also have plenty of scrap material to built it with, so I could probably do it for no out of pocket cost. Do you have the sign?

Jackie

Do you have specs on the sign dimensions etc.? I know we have a couple sheets of plywood that might work and possibly some 2x4's and even some green shingles for the "roof" if that would help. I don't think we have a 4x4 for the post though.

I do have the sign. I can provide dimensions.

I'll take inventory of what is in my garage and let you know I find. What kind of materials are acceptable so I know what to look for?

I'm happy to pitch in for materials cost and refreshments for those working on it!

The school I teach at has a wood/ construction class. Maybe we can utilize them if no one has time to build it.

Jackie

That would be a great class project! And a great opportunity to teach the kids about respecting our trails and open-space in general. Maybe we could organize a "poster contest" to your class with a prize of some sort awarded to the student with the best design concept (as judged by polling on FR4x4). Winning poster would be laminated and posted on the sign.

Just a thought...

FWIW, Brant and/or Nicholas should be able to provide a drawing and written specifications (materials) for the sign. They refer to it as the "birdhouse," sign board.

I have a copy of the drawing for the larger sign board, not much use in this circumstance. I should be able to digitize it in the near future. If we get a copy of the "birdhouse" drawing, I can digitize that as well.

It is 2'x2', 2' tall at its peak. Roof panels are 3" wide. Post is 4"x4". I just got back from Home Depot, the post is about $13.50.

I like the class project / student involvement idea. Would that be too much hassle for the project?

Brad

No, just has to be the same size as the old ones. My boss has a large laminator and a excellent printer if need be.

I have a bunch of 4x4 posts as well as other lumber and some plywood. It is all used from my old deck, so it is painted white but still in decent shape. A new coat of brown paint will have it looking new. Happy to donate it, or build the sign myself. Let me know.

Hey - if people can get away with shooting at and by other means, trashing our sign, shouldn't we have the right to display artwork from a student? The "gubbermint" apparently doesn't care about or doesn't have the time and funds to care about the vandalism. I highly doubt they would object to a thoughtful poster created by one of our youth.:thumb:

The sign that gets hung there is the one that credits Front Range 4x4 as the adoptee as I recall. Brant printed those from a graphic file provided which he may still have.

I've got access to a lot of aluminum plate, tubing, and a fab shop. I'd be happy to weld up some new signs if needed!

I have the other sign as well. I can give them to you Jackie if you want some reference as what they should say.

Has to be wood, exactly as it was. That was my first thought as well.

I've really only volunteered some plywood and 2x4's! I am hanging on to the idea for the high school class make it in wood shop and the maybe make some posters with the message "they" would like to be displayed.

I'll be happy to help in any way I can, but I am not a graphic artist, nor am I a wood-worker.:D

ah, well I'm not sure what wood we have. I'm a PM at a sign company in Englewood so I'm sure I could come up with something if needed. We usually work on hotels and casinos but I can make exceptions!

I penciled in the date. Unless something major comes up, I'll be there. Still haven't gotten to the garage yet to see what I have sitting in there, but from what I have read, I may not have materials that are needed. Just for the record, I like the idea of the students making up the signage. Think it would make a great way to get the next generation into the sport.

Another club built a sign out of steel and the FS made them take it down and replace with wood. We don't need to do the work twice specially since it's pretty basic.

If there's a stall on the sign production, I'll get it done if spec's can find me.

Brad

Jackie, do you want to contact the school? Can they get it done by the end of the school year with finals looming? I only ask as Neil is getting ready for finals.

Sandwich some plate steel in between the wood. No more bullet holes.

Brad

Brant said no dice. I asked about reinforcing and he said it has to be entirely wood. As I stated, just like it was. Makes no sense to me as we can build something equally as nice if not better and still paint it brown. Nevertheless, as it was.

Oh, it's likely spec'd in some gub'mint document - that's being nicely "forgotten" by Brant. ;)

While 1/4" steel would give most guns a tough time (heat treated too!), wood over steel would just have the top layer of wood being blasted apart.

Chris
April 28th, 2014, 08:30 PM
I can see some dope taking the sign out with a truck and suing the FS id it was steel which is probably why it has to be wood.

Why is the gubbmint the villain, when the problem is miscreants who destroy our property?

Jim
April 29th, 2014, 01:04 AM
Aw, c'mon now - Sensibility? Coming full circle to the root problem?

You're on the money, but it seems the thread was taking the bent - of "hardening" the sign for reduced damage by the miscreants, of which out government has rules we need to follow.

Hmmm - we could use a time delay motion and sound (bang!) activated video recorder to capture the image of the sign, trail vehicle(s), license plate for some evidence... Hmmm... The sign will be spot on per the spec's, but 100' "over there" will be some hidden addition to the forest...

Solar charged, battery run, USB flash drive for storage, one of the common "project boards" to run the recorder of those causing the damage.

That would be nice, but they would just show back up and blow holes in it as well. It is a never-ending battle. Maybe we should build about a dozen signs so we can have some in reserve.

Chris

It would make sense to build a few extras since they're pretty simple though IIRC they lasted better than 4 years which isn't bad considering what happens on some other trails.

I am going to get the exact specs of the sign posted today. Jeff said he might have all the supplies laying around to build it. I offered up buying the sign post as it is only $13. I will paint the sign when I get the paint from either Brant or Nicholas.

As for the additional duties we are going to need to get a sign crew together. On devils canyon I would like to see a clean up crew as well as a sign install crew. It doesn't take 8-10 people to put up the sign. Having volunteered with stay the trail ambassadors I watched 4 people fix a fence while 7 watched. :D

I will post more specifics in expectations from the USFS and Nicholas after I have gotten a reply from my email to him. He is probably still getting organized as he is contacting several volunteer groups.

Well, that's how my rusty mind recalled it (and I am too lazy to go back and read the thread for, you know, FACTS).

Either that, or I just found it easy to poke Jackie in the side.

And, since nobody quoted me, I'm now throwing dirt over my tracks... :lmao:

Any new info on the laminated signs? Will the FS print them again?

Brad - I think I have the 4x4 posts as well. I think there are 3 of them sitting along my house, 8' in length painted white. They are waiting for something like this, or to be cut up for trash day. Happy to either make the signs with them or donate them. I have enough other scrap that we shouldn't need to buy anything.

Brad
May 4th, 2014, 11:44 AM
Sounds good Jeff. Are you available to build them? I can drop off the old sign on my way home from work Monday.

As as for the signs, Brant said he did not have them still. I can make them like they were and get them laminated. Unless someone else has a better idea.

I've a piece of high density particle board that's the right size. 241/4x34x1/2 " thick. Don't know how this product stands up to the elements, but you can have it if it will work.

Patrolman

Yeah, I have all the tools to build them as well. Just 2 of them, right? If you drop off the sign, or have it at work so I can pick it up, than I can build one to match. I won't be able to pick it up Monday, Wednesday or Friday though. Only Tuesday or Thursday. You can drop them off at my place near Morrison if that works. I have lots of other scraps including plywood.
