Hoping to head up to the dunes on Saturday May 31, most likely I'll go the night before after work and camp in the area. Anyone interested?

I am.
My Friday and Saturday aren't scheduled so I stuck it and reserved the dates (barring any emergency).
What does the area have wrt camping amenities? (bottom line: toilets - none or at least vault??)
Pack in a cooler with food or visit town for one meal a day?

You can camp just about anywhere, and there are vault toilets in atleast 3 locations. Walden isn't much of a town, but there may be some great food I don't know about. I'll be bringing a cooler. Some good info here: http://www.riderplanet-usa.com/atv/trails/info/colorado_05790/ride_589e.htm

I recommend cooking in camp. Town looked pretty baron for restaurants and it's a bit of a drive away.

It was a lot of fun Shane!! Here's the trip report: http://www.frontrange4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?19250-North-Sand-Hills
I've been dying to get back there ever since, and I want to go before it gets too buggy and hot. I'm hoping it will be relatively quiet that weekend too, most of the trails in the area that close seasonally open around June 15 so it's probably going to be wide open again. I do want to go again later in the year, there is an abandoned logging town on the FS roads above the dunes (that I know nothing about except that it exists) that I want to explore. Probably in the fall.

I thought driving on the dunes was pretty easy for the most part, and I was aired down to 20 psi. For sure I'm going to 15 psi this time, this video shows how crazy the difference is.

a bike and an FJ80 tearing it up. After 2:30 the FJ jumps and they pass a car on the sand. It's the second time I've seen an AWD car in a video there, I guess anything 4wd can do it.

^^^ That was great! When you said awd car I was thinking Subaru, not an Infiniti g35x!

I want to change the date of this run to June 19, Thursday. Jim, you're the only yes so far, any issues with that? I have that Thursday-sun off and would love to get there on a weekday when it's empty and quiet for camping.

Hey Paul, sorry I sat on your PM. My hold is that I might stay as-is because I asked a friend if he'd like to join. He and his son said yes. I haven't spoken with them. Regardless, I'll likely stay as-is because, while a weekday would be nicer, I don't think I should take the extra weekday off.
If you wish to change - go right ahead. If I stay as planned I/we will miss your company - but if it works better for you in June - do it.
Any recommendation as to where you would have set up camp (care to use google map and set a push-pin for where I should look)?

We'll stay as is, I had some other plans cancel for the 19th on so I was just seeing if the switch would work, but I'm still onboard for the 31st. Thanks anyway Jim, I appreciate it!
As far as camping goes just about anywhere is fine, but I want to get away from the RVs as much as possible. The RVs are generally around the toilet areas where they can be towed to, but there are many trails around the dunes that you can camp off of with relative privacy. I'm going to bring a portable toilet too. You don't have to worry much exploring / looking for a site there if you're solo, you can see the dunes from the gas station on 125 in Cowdrey, if things went south you can walk out pretty easily. When you enter the dune road, 2509, you come to a split- in the Wells book it's waypoint 08. The network north of the road that runs between point 08 and Harvey's Hill is where I think the best spots will be. I'll try to find it on googlemaps too.

I actually need to spend any free time I have finishing my bumper before the Father's Day Moab Adventure (FDMA)! But the dunes will happen. Oh yes, they'll happen.

License plate lite's installed (but I might have to relocate it with the larger spare)
CB antenna is re-mounted and wired (SWR is still high - sigh)
Picked up a new wheel for the spare tire - will mount tomorrow.
`wish to change engine and trans fluids
`wish to clean the air filter
`wish to balance all five tires - likely this week
Need to check than I can construct the tent.
I have a large & small cooler set to bring.
I have eating utensils and zero cooking tools - what are thoughts for food / cooking?

I'm in the middle of a bunch of stuff on my Jeep too, it's a lot better to do it in my garage on my time than on the side of the road! I'm not going to know if I'm camping Friday or not until work is set next week; if not I'm going to leave Denver at 5-6am on Sat and just make it a long round trip day. Really want to camp! I just picked up some firewood in anticipation of doing so. I'll probably keep it as simple as possible, like some Chipolte, misc. snack stuff, fruit and coffee, little to no cooking if I can help it.
if it works out, Friday night...

So they changed the forecast a bit, bigger chance of rain. Took off my tube doors, put my softtop and full doors on. So it probably won't rain. :)

Awesome! If you go to that weather link and look at the hourly for the weekend the rain potential stops at 8pm on Friday and Saturday morning looks gorgeous. :) I'm packing up gear now, I'm going to leave after work, I'm guessing that will be at 5-7 pm depending on the day. I'm PMing you and Gary my cell, I'll look for you when I get there. This is going to be great!! :thumb:
