Was wondering what are the rules about age of membership? I am hoping to get my daughter involved into the maintenance and building of her truck before she can get in it and drive. Depending on how things go I thought it might be good for her to post up her own build thread rather than me posting about it. Help her to build communication skills at the same time as reinforcing what she learned. I am still thinking at least a year or two before we start.

Just how old is she? I would imagine it would have to depend on if she were driving age. Of course I could be blowing smoke.

She is 12 now and I would like to start when she is 14 to give us 2 years to prepare vehicle for her to drive.

I personally think it should be fine. She just has to make sure she comes along with you to meet the 1 run a year rule, I think. Maybe she does have to drive.

A) Give the rules a read. The major item would be the yearly drive your rig / trail cleanup requirement (which she could fulfill as-is).
B) Skip A!! If this would further / positively enhance the life of a child - that's all that is needed in my eye.
If she's interested, help her through the sign-up process (see what she says about reading the rules [don't just tell her to skip over it - educate her that it is upon her decision to read the rules so she knows what she's signing up for]).
If you'd like this thread purged (before she might see it), holler.

Thanks Jim, will see if it is something she is interested in.

I'd love to see the young-ones get involved. This is a family forum, and pretty harmless as far as content goes. I plan to let my 9 yr. old take the wheel on a nice flat dirt trail just as soon as she can reach the pedals and see over the steering wheel!
She already likes to "spot me" when I bring the Jeep into the garage! I like to mess with her by steering hard right, hard left, go too fast, go too slow, back out, - whatever, just to watch her give me hand signals to make it through the "obstacle". She does a good job with her hand signals. It's just fun to mess with her! And then she tells me: "Mom - I've seen you do harder stuff than this"!!!

This brings up the topic of legal driving age when on a trail. For public roadways, ?16? is the law, but for forest land / trails I could see it being a parent's choice (for less than 16 / no driver's license). Anyone research this?

Kids are allowed to drive atv's and dirt bikes legally off road. Not sure about cars and trucks, but if the vehicle is legal and it is indeed off-road then...
I wouldn't suggest putting a kid into the mix of a group run or anything, I plan on easy, private training on a secluded dirt trail where no-one else is around.

My daughter has already gotten behind the wheel on trails. She sits in my lap to allow me control of throttle and brakes but knows spotter signals and can follow them. I used to allow her to climb in my lap and steer in the parking lot of my condo to the garage, she was 4 then and did a pretty good job. Agreed not with others around and in a safe environment. That is what I like about being out on a trail to teach her with. Nobody else to worry about, very slow speed(4 low 1st gear), touchy throttle and an e brake that works!

Let her do it! From a teacher standpoint, communication skills are going to be the best thing she gets from the forum. She has her daddy for help with questions about the rig. Formulating thoughtful and informative posts while realizing that real people use real English and grammar (this site is pretty good about avoiding text speak) will help her a great deal.
That and young people find the most outrageous stuff on YouTube :) She is welcome in my eyes!

I think us law says we should limit access until someone is 13. See http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/61770/how-do-i-use-stack-exchange-if-im-under-13-years-old

I do think that people should be able to meet the membership requirements via ride alongs but I don't think I'm in the majority.
