So picked up a new rig a couple of weeks ago, or well its a truck right now but i " think " it can be a trail rig im honestly not sure how well they do off road in colorado.

Stats:
2001 Chevy S-10 ZR2 4.3V6 5Spd 4X4
113k miles
Almost* everything works
31X10.50's
LSD 9bolt rear & 1/2ton front
Paid: $3,800 from my wife's dad, truck Booked over $6k in fair condition.

Seems pretty good on fuel and i like the inside a lot, very comfortable to drive

And some Photos!

Congrats! I'm sure there is plenty you can do to make it trail-worthier than it already is!

yea, i was playing with it in the mud a few days ago and sank the rear end pretty well in 2wd. was pleasantly surprised from the result, aired down to 16 and pushed the 4low button and she crawled right out without hassle or complaints.

Sweet I've always like S10s! It has IFS right? If I remember correctly there is a solid axle swap for an S10 on craigslist.

B) Drive it 'till it drops.

The 4.3/5spd should go at least that many more miles. There's not a lot of aftermarket support from what I have read, but it can be done.

I kinda miss my 92 I had there are decent Lil trucks, although I never got a chance to run it on any trails before it finally died. I would recommend a body lift for it instead of suspension if you decide to raise it any higher.

Suspension or body? The only 2" suspension I know of is rough country. If So just keep an eye on though upper ball joint at least on the older design they tend to wear out quick.

Nice rig.

some info.
those rear flares are really difficult to find, if you can find a whole un broken one in the salvage yard grab it. FWIW if you put a non ZR2 bed on it, you can use Blazer ZR2 rear flares, they wont have as much clearance as the pickup ones but they are easier to find and remove.

All the chassis parts are the same for a non ZR2 and a ZR2, the Frame is the physical difference, The mounting points for the suspension are what give it the lift and width.

4.3's are known to have Lower intake Manifold (LIM) gasket leaks, its an easy fix can be doen in less than an hour, look at the front of the block where the manifold and block meet. Ignition control modals are known to go bad when they get hot, but they are cheap so buy one and keep it int he glove box, they kill spark when bad at temp, but will test good when cold.

DO NOT put anything other than Syncromesh in the Transmission, or the syncros will go out. Pensoil syncromesh is recomended, Castrol has an equivalent.

In stock form they are quite capable off road, provided the LSD hasn't worn out. Even still they do alright.

Fair warning, if you do wish to offroad it get comfortable chaining Idler arms, they are under rated for the trucks IMO. there is aftermarket support to run a 1 ton but its costly if you don't need it.

I just noticed the body lift, 33x11.50 will fit with careful trimming for light off road use. 33X10.50 will fit well with next to no trimming.

Wow the for the info. I think I will rock it as is for right now while I pay off some bills and stuff. I'll look in to the gasket and the ign controller.

Is it supposed to have like no balls after 3k rpm in any gear?

The power band is between about 2100 and 3300. I rarely ever break 3k when driving mine, they aren't power houses that's for sure.

If you need help with something let me know, these are my Nichè.

welcome to the zr2 club! they are nice trucks for sure, but just like every other vehicle, they have some common flaws, but they can all be corrected!

www.zr2usa.com is a great resource! also, justin at www.synergyoffroad.com has a lot of "custom" parts specifically for zr2s (1 ton idler arms, HD from suspenion kits etc...). one of the great benefits of your truck is that it's a 5spd. you should have an iron front diff in that bad boy...very sought after in the zr2 community! the 4.3 is a bulletproof engine (350 sbc with 2 cylinders chopped off...literally)...cheap parts and plenty reliable.

just some clarifications in your original post. you should have an 8.6" 10bolt rear, not a 9 bolt (basically the same rear from a 1/2 ton pickup), but your front diff is the same as the standard s10 (7.25", just made of iron due to the 5spd).

if you ever have any specific questions, shoot me a message!

buddy in HS had a single cab. Put mud tires on it, and that thing went nearly every where we wanted it. Lots of fond memories in that truck.

98+ but anything newer than 01, Idealy. everything is interchange able between blazer and pickup. and if you were to ever get a wild hair to swap in vortec 350, its plug and play with a PCM reflash.
