Hey guys! Just moved here from the Chicagoland area back in February. I drive an 85 m1009 cucv.

Looking forward to doing some mild offroading for now.

Surprised there are so many from the Chicagoland area!

I still need to really look around the site and get some advice on a few things like a winch and some trail gear.

Quick little update. I just finished up installing a turbo. It can now move out of its own way.

If you need help with that rig, I'm pretty well set up for them and have been through every square inch of every moving and electrical part on these rigs! I'll soon have a ton of spare internal engine parts since my block cracked in THREE PLACES (@30K miles), and have spares of most of the military junk (I took pretty much everything off). I'd like to see a bit more on that turbo install. I will be installing a P400 in mine when I gather the funds, and it'll get the crap boosted out of it!

That's similar to the one I saw on that other guy's truck in that it retains the stock bumper. Have you done anything else to the truck? What size are those tires? 31X12.50?

I wanted it as high up as I could get it in the frame rails. Cutting a hole in the bumper for the fairlead wasnt a big deal to me. I may try and counter sink it into the bumper more

The guy's truck had the winch mounted to a heavy plate installed between the frame rails. The bumper was completely cut away, and the face of the fairlead was installed flush with the face of the bumper such that the fairlead took the place of the license plate and looked pretty much completely factory. He also installed some sort of plastic lining around the cutaway part of the bumper that really tied it together well.

Very similar to yours, but mounted independent of the bumper and behind it instead of directly bolted to it.

The only difference I'm seeing is that he cut out the entire thing from the bottom vs mine where I just cut a hole for the fairlead. I still might cut the hole big enough to attach the fairlead directly to the winch instead of thru the bumper with spacers.

Yeah. It's basically the same thing. This is a compliment to your winch mounting design strategy. I'm just stating the differences since you mentioned countersinking it into the bumper more. It sounds like it's exactly what you're going for. The fairlead is inset into the bumper a bit and the bumper goes around it. It's mounted to a big chunky steel plate that he rigged up to mount between the frame members. The faces of the inner rollers are more or less even with the deepest part of the bumper pressing giving it a very flush look; that's the aesthetic key in my opinion. I don't know if he meant to do that or it just worked out that way, but it looks really good.

I doled out quite a bit of Google-foo trying to find a winch mount bumper that looked halfway decent on a square bodied Chevy and I don't think it's really possible. The body is just so squared off that anything you do without some pressed detail will essentially just look like a chunk of 2X4 stock tacked onto the front with krazy glue. Any curvier (all those wacky tube jobs) and it doesn't fit with the rest of the body, any less curvy and you're in bauhaus land. My strategy at this point is to just do what I can to reinforce and beef up the factory pressing while retaining the stock pressing details, and then cut the winch in behind the bumper like you (intend to) and (guy) did.

Yep, mine is mounted the same exact way. I used a universal winch mount plate and cut it to fit between the rails.
