Sept 6, Saturday, I'll be heading up to the North Sand Hills via the backway to camp for the night. It will be the first camping trip with my trailer! I want to make a stop at the Old Roach townsite. If you look at the map section below you can see it's off FR 200 (upper right, North Sand Hills are lower left), and apparently the splash dam on stuck creek is about a mile from the townsite. We'd like to park at the townsite and hike to it, then continue to the dunes and set up camp.

On the way we'll take Deadman road, John Fielder describes it: http://books.google.com/books?id=BOTa5gUx4x0C&pg=PT156&lpg=PT156&dq=deadman+colorado+road&source=bl&ots=rtK-vNMfil&sig=EC8GGlKfwEYHOCcy-GHDyZHy-Tw&hl=en&sa=X&ei=PHrxU_TQNc2gyASS3oCABQ&ved=0CEEQ6AEwBg#v=onepage&q=deadman%20colorado%20road&f=false

and then connect to Hohnholz lake road, http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=364

to the North Sand Dunes road http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=366

down to the awesome North Sand Hills for a night of camping and maybe night runs, and some more the next day.

Here's a great video about Old Roach:

Forgive if you know but as a heads up the dunes on labor day weekend are a zoo. ATV's, jeeps, motorcycles screaming all night.

I'd camp up in the hills especially if I was coming in from that direction.

Lots of fun to watch the craziness but to camp in the normal areas not so much.

Labor day is this Monday, the 1st, I picked the one after on purpose. :) From my limited experience at the dunes it seems that the good camping is where the ATV trailers can't go, north of the dunes area near wehre the back way starts. You have to bring your own pooper, you'll be far from the outhouses, but you can get some solitude in a beautiful area. Check out the area at the end of this video after Gary rescues us, it's sort of where I mean:

Sorry, reading comprehension today isn't the best!

I'm very deep into adding hardwood flooring and painting the house or I'd go along. I've always wanted to try the back roads from the east into the dunes.

I'm down to a maybe on my own run, in the tradition of something f-ed up happening before all my runs some asshat broke into my garage and stole stuff I'm still discovering, including my welder which I found was gone when I went to use it today. I have to finish fender and light mounts for my trailer to be done, but now I have to get a new welder before I can finish. Odd bit of luck, I have the bypass fuse in for my Jeep doors so the light doesn't come on when I use tube doors. Two bags of tools right there that they couldn't see when they opened the door. :thumb:

that's just the parking area, it's not a ghost town it's a townsite. It was on leased land and when the tie work wrapped up they removed it, there's not much to see there. If you watch the video it shows the Splash Dam, and what is on those videos is just a portion of the remenants in those woods, but you have to hike to see it all. I hear there is a very weird circle of cabins with a stage in the center, but haven't been able to find any pics. Moonshiner vehicles too.
