I know some of you are boycotting the NFL, so if that is you, this thread isn't for you.

Super excited to be able to be a part of the flag ceremony during the National anthem at this Sunday's Bronco's game. The group of season ticket holders I am fortunate enough to go to the games with got chosen once again to help hold the HUGE flag before the game. This includes not only being a part in the ceremony, but also being able to be down on the field and sidelines with the players and coaches. So look for the crazy dude with a large red goatee who will probably make an ass out of himself by tripping and falling or something. Then you can tell those around you that you know the idiot who just fell and have a good laugh. Should be a fun time either way! Wish us luck!

Lol, definitely no star here. Just an idiot in an alley ;)

I will be sure to take as many photos as possible. Have already learned from those who have done this before that we will want to be on the KC side of the flag. I guess those on the Denver side aren't allowed near the players or staff but those that are on the KC side actually mingle in between the players and coaches.

They are pretty protective of their field. I have however been on the it a few time now. Even have a couple photos of me on the center of the field from when my wife and I were looking at having our wedding there. Kinda wish we had done it there still, but the Denver Museum of Nature and Science turned out to be an AWESOME venue for us.

Sweet! KC sideline while holding the flag. Wearing a white Broncos hat and an orange Welker jersey, big red goatee.

Getting super excited.

Awesome experience to be apart of. Nothing like being on the field with 76,000+ fans are cheering and screaming their heads off. And we got to shake Dan Reeves' hand just before the game. Was very cool as he was the coach as I was growing up. Anywho, here are a couple photos. I took a stupid amount of photos, something like 92. So I haven't had time to go through them all yet.

For a little perspective... Before during practice:

And during the ceremony:

Are there people under the flag so that it does not touch the ground? Does it touch the ground?

The flag is never supposed to touch the ground. And I don't believe it did during our time with it. There are no people stationed under the flag. But they let those 12 years old and younger, run around under the flag if they wish to do so. I tried to snap a couple photos of some of the kids running by underneath but don't think I actually captured any of them.

Really the biggest shock was how they stored the flag. Completely unfolded, just bunched up and placed into a big wooden crate. In fact the flag was VERY damp still from a previous outing and smelled horrible. Worst than most high school locker rooms.

Ouch! That's just wrong. It should be clean and folded neatly each and every time. (I come from a military family). When we hung the flag outside our house for whatever reason, my Dad would supervise how we brought it in and put it away. (And we were just kids - but there were no mistakes allowed...). The flag NEVER touched the ground! The flag raising and lowering routines also had rules. (I don't remember them all).
Your experience must have been a lot of fun though, Brucker!!!:)

Not funny at all IMHO. That was to be expected as I was raised... Even as a guest at a church (with a religion you may not follow). We were taught to behave and be respectful. Religion is one thing. Patriotism is another. You may choose not to take communion in a Lutheran church if you are a Catholic for example, but you can sit back respectfully and quietly and enjoy the experience. Disregard for the American flag (especially from a major organization such as the NFL), is wrong. And they are role models for our kids whether they like it or not. I hope the kids were not invited to participate in putting it away like that.

EDIT: I'm not blaming the NFL - I don't know who is in charge of organizing such a spectacular event!

That is a part of what's wrong with our culture.

It IS wrong. Chris! They shouldn't be idolized at all - but kids are kids. Kids are going to idolize everyone they admire (for whatever reason). So whether you are the neighbor next door with a terrific garden, a super-model with a rockin' wardrobe and perfect figure, an athlete with amazing abilities, a fantastic cook etc., kids will aspire to be like you for one reason or another. We adults dig a little deeper before we "idolize" anyone.

There is nothing we can do about it (that I can think of). We're all grown-ups here. Some kids either like us or they don't. If they like you... I hope you're doing something positive to affect their lives! We adults are ALL role models, like it or not!

With regard to the American flag... I think the traditions and respect due need to be followed better, televised or not. The organizers and/or the management in charge of the venue should consider that.

rant

(not barking at you Jackie, or anyone specific).

Regarding kids idolizing people/things that are not or might not be good...

It's up to the adults (parents as first in line, or to a degree, others) to teach the kids. It's up to us to raise them (and not sit back and be hands off with a kids will do what kids will do).
