I went visiting last night, heard a story about a guy driving his Tacoma from Evergreen to Golden with no clutch. His lady friend said "it sounds like loose change in the dryer." We went out to the shop to look things over. I cycled the clutch pedal, the hydraulics felt pretty firm. He was under the truck watching the clutch fork move. He thought it acted odd when I released the clutch. We were expecting to find the ball stud had come out of the bell housing.

When the transmission was out, I had to take pictures. this is some downright gearhead porn! The clutch fingers had been breaking off the pressure plate for some time. Of the seven that were broken off, only three were still in the bell housing. There was a hole in the upper half of the bell housing. I find it hard to believe the other four clutch fingers made it out the same hole...

Interesting. My daughters XJ sounds like loose change in a dryer too. but it's an automatic. Flexplate loose? What else is in there that could rattle? I heard it close up last Monday before it got cold while looking for an oil leak. Seems to be leaking from behind the angle adapter but couldn't get the allen screw loose. Maybe this week when it warms up.

Or the flex plate is tight but the flex plate its self has carcks/fractures in it.

The oil filter adapter takes a T-60 bit and special words to get loose. I don't want to speculate on the noise, but at least the auto has a removable cover to access the torque converter bolts.

That's impressive. Have not seen that before.

Thanks for the bit size Mike, I was trying with a 3/8ths allen. It didn't fit quite right so I wasn't trying really hard. I'll try with the torx when it warms up a tad this week. Also will remove the inspection plate & see whats shakin' in there. The rattle is definitely in that area.

After replacing my flex-plate twice in the rodeo due to over tightening, I switched to a manual trans. I like my manual a little more.

It sounded like loose change for about 1 minute then i lost power to the wheels altogether.

The owner claimed 65K. He also said this was the O'Reily "made in China" clutch kit.

I don't know how long it took for him to rack up the miles, but I do know he has taken cross-country trips.

Finally got back to work on the XJ. Been to Cali for two weeks. Found 3 of 4 bolts loose on flexplate/tc. One 1/4 turn, one a full turn, one about 2 turns. Hope that takes care of the rattle. Then had to grind down my T-60 bit at both ends to get into the filter adapter, not much room there. After grinding the tip I had to file the burrs to get it into the bolt. Got it broke loose with a breakover & cheater pipe, ratcheted it part way, then had to turn the bit with pliers to get that sucker out. What a PIA, but got 'er out. Expecting just as much fun getting it back in tomorrow.
