If you're into MMA / BJJ and have looked into lessons you probably know that it can get pricey. The Gracie family has a program that a lot of guys in rural areas or places without a dojo around use called Gracie Garages. https://www.gracieuniversity.com/apply.aspx?enc=b4am%2fVqyoYdfbD8Fg4TD%2fw%3d%3d They are usually in someone's home garage, but there is an actual Martial Arts studio doing it at 77th and Wadsworth. http://ascenttrainingcenter.com/schedule/ Sam, the instructor has trained with the Gracies and is awesome, and the school is big and super clean. The owner, Kris, is very nice and the atmosphere is casual, no egos and no one is getting hurt, just training and having fun. It's almost all white belts, and all adults from 20s to 50s, oddly enough almost everyone is an engineer by trade. No meatheads, no steroid freaks or TapOut Bros, just nice people. This is only going to be free for a couple of months until the Gracie certifications are complete, so if you've ever thought of it this is a rare opportunity to do it in a professional setting for free. No contracts, but you do have to sign a waiver. It's a small group that is looking to grow, that's why I'm posting this. :) You don't need anything but shorts and a tshirt to try it, you can get a gi later if you stick with it. We're training this Wed. night, most weeks Thurs. PM me or contact Ascent on the link above or on FB. :thumb:

I highly recommend martial arts to everyone of every age group. I'm not familiar with Jiu Jitsu, and I don't think it would be the style of choice for me personally, but I did do 3 yrs of Tae Kwon Do along with my husband and eldest daughter. A really great experience for all of us. My husband and I were only a few months away from achieving black-belt ranking when we moved to Colorado. Our daughter passed the test and DID receive her black belt just weeks before we came here. She developed such great balance and coordination (not to mention strength, confidence and determination), that she excelled in high school sports and to this day has the self-discipline that we all need in so many ways. (And she can throw a damn good punch! Don't piss her off, because her kicks are pretty painful too. Just ask one of the boys who was bugging her and one of her friends at a party one night and refused to stop after many requests to leave them alone)!

This program might really be worth checking out! If it is family-friendly and they are not "out for blood", you will get a great workout and great training. :)
