I'm picking this up on Friday from a friend of mine. It'll be my new tow rig and daily driver.

2001 Lariat w/ Auto transmission. 6.0L Trans cooler upgrade, aluminum deep sump trans pan, aluminum oversized diff cover, HP oil line equalizer, TS Performance chip, boost/trans/EGT a-pillar gauge set, air bags, Kenwood touchscreen, new tires, brake controller, and all with just a bit over 104,000 miles. I'm very excited as its almost the exact truck I wanted and in all reality the short bed will be plenty big enough.

I am planning to get a gooseneck hitch for it as soon as possible along with a new Wicked Wheel 2 for the turbo. Eventually I'd like to add some beefier bumpers and winches to both ends. I want a rear winch to help with loading vehicles onto a trailer, plus it could come in handy when hunting.

Welcome to the stroker world. I love mine. There's times I wish I had a long bed but when ever I park it I'm glad I don't.

Yeah, I had a 96 Dually flatbed Powerstroke before but it was a total piece of poop and wound up shoving a valve through a piston. Still, it towed my Jeep over I-70 with only 7 functioning cylinders and still managed 14mpg. I would have replaced the engine but the truck was so beat to hell it wasn't worth it.

Very nice! I've heard some bad rumblings about the 6.0. Hopefully it is a good motor for you.

2001 and 6.0? 01 should be a 7.3. Looks like a nice truck, congrats :thumb:

It is a 7.3, it just has a 6.0l tranny cooler. The stock tranny cooler on the 6.0l is almost 3x the size of the one the 7.3 came with.

That's a good looking truck. Part of me want to get a full sized truck like this. But I don't tow anything. I drive about 140 miles a day. So I don't know how much sense it makes.

looks good. i am also on the lookout for a tow rig but i am partial to dodges for the cummins. but a 7.3 ford would be my 2nd or 3rd choice after the dodge.

Yeah, nice score with that kind of miles. You're gonna love it all loaded up, heading up the pass.

I'm a big fan of the Dodges and Cummins too but they are way more expensive used than the Ford's or Chevy's. An while the Cummins has its advantages, the rest of the truck is probably the least well built of the three of them. I am absolutely not a Ford fan, in fact when it comes to gas trucks its GM or Dodge all the way, but the Super Duty is IMHO the better built truck in terms of chassis and suspension. Engine wise the 7.3L is very much on par with the Cummins, maybe less reliable than a 12V but more reliable than a 24V and in between the two of them performance wise. The Ford transmissions are better than the Dodge units for reliability and function, but can't really compete with that Allison.

I truly feel that no matter which heavy duty diesel truck you buy (Dodge, GM, or Ford) you really can't go wrong. All 3 have their particular quirks and their specific advantages. The 6.0L Fords are by far the best bargain for a used diesel with the Cummins powered Dodges being the most over priced. The Duramax trucks are in between the 2 in the pricing vs condition/mileage ratio. 7.3L Fords are almost as bad as the Cummins in that aspect but I managed to get a fair/good deal on this one as I've know the owner for over 13yrs.

Really the used truck market in general (including 1/2ton trucks) is freaking ridiculous these days. I was planning to get a 1/2ton or 3/4 ton gas truck (5.7L Hemi Dodge or 6.0L GM) as I really don't have an immediate need to tow my Jeep and the truck's primary role will be as my DD. I really wanted to stay at or below the 100,000 mile mark as I've owned plenty of 200,000+ mile vehicles and I'm over it. These days that put me in the 20,000$ price range and at that cost I decided to just get the truck I really wanted now instead of paying more than I wanted for a truck I would eventually out grow and replace. I'd pretty much given up on finding a low mileage 7.3L at a fair price until a chance conversation with my buddy lead to him discussing his desire to sell off his truck since he was buying another one from his Uncle. The timing was almost perfect as I was getting ready to go on the hunt for a truck and he was getting ready to sell this one. I had to push my time table up a few months but was able to make it work out so I'm pretty damn stoked.

very true about the fords being nicer/better built trucks. and the price of dodges being super high. 6.0 fords are definitely the best bargain but they also have the most issues compared to the rest which is why i will not be buying one. i'm not opposed to a 7.3 ford or a duramax but the dodge is at the top of my list. going to look at a few different trucks this saturday.

You just need to go into the 6.0L with the right mindset and plan ahead. They're actually really good engines and offer a better transmission than the 7.3l, plus a bit more fuel efficiency. The big thing with them is doing an EGR upgrade and oil cooler upgrade. Other than that I say just don't chip the damn thing, it already makes plenty of power. Like all HEUI engines, regular oil changes and high quality oil are important as it'll not only affect engine life but the fuel system and injectors as well.

I mi was going to most likely get a 6.0L if it wasn't for this truck sort of falling in my lap.

If I didn't have to do emissions i,d rate the 6.0 higher up. But I'd have to keep the egr cooler. I may still end up with one but it's another 800 is for a good egr cooler and oil cooler etc.

Yep, so I just met up with my buddy at his sister's house in Brighton. He brought the truck over from Grand Junction as he was coming to visit family anyway.

This video sums it up nicely:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pT04RqXrBKY

It drives great and even on just the +50hp setting it scoots very nicely. Merging onto the interstate was pretty fun (it hits 24psi of boost on that setting btw) and its soo much smoother and nicer than the Jeep. It cruises along at 75ish mph very nicely and the little display (that is most likely full of lies) crept up to 19mpg. Even with the loud diesel its quieter on the interstate too, I can actually hear my radio. The Kenwood touchscreen deck is pretty sweet, I can stream Pandora via Bluetooth to my phone. He also added a Bully Dog shift enhancer kit that raises the transmission line pressure a bit, the shifts are nice and firm without being harsh. Its just a great driving truck all around. I'm very happy with it and can't wait to put it to use.

My "Rigs" were formally introduced this morning. I was hoping the colors would match a bit better, but oh well.

As a reward I installed some new 2006 HD Edition headlights and a black Excursion grill. The next step will be to paint the bumper black as I hate chrome.

those headlights do look good. i will have to swap some of those on to mine one day. there are several sets on ebay.

Dutch
February 1st, 2015, 09:36 PM
I picked them up on ebay. They're the 2005+ HD edition, but the standard 2005+ ones are really nice too. Honestly though if I wasn't so set on the HD Edition lights I would have merely gone to the 2003/4 headlights. They're a direct bolt in but have clear turn signals and a clear lense. The 05+ lights require a lot of cutting to the header panel to install.

AccordRanger
February 2nd, 2015, 09:54 PM
Are they oem or after market?

Dutch
February 2nd, 2015, 10:14 PM
Aftermarket lights, but OEM design as opposed to some ricered out BS.

AccordRanger
February 2nd, 2015, 11:32 PM
How's the light out put? I'm always on the fence about after market lights after one I bought for my Honda fit horribly and had the lows shining up high and highs hit the ground.

Dutch
February 3rd, 2015, 12:21 PM
Light output is very good. I can't speak much on how well they fit as you need to modify the header panel to go to the 05+ lights anyway but the body lines match up correctly.

I got my Blue OX gooseneck hitch installed, that was a pain in the ass. Not difficult, just a pain. I need to figure out how to go about remounting my air bags too as the frame mounts on the hitch are in the way now.

Then today I helped a buddy move his broken down Fat Boy to another friend's house to get worked on.

Is that the trailer you drug over Kingston Peak? It looks... happier, than the last time I saw it. :D

Dutch
February 16th, 2015, 11:08 AM
Same trailer. I haven't made any changes to it since that trip other than moving one of the motorcycle chock to the center. I also moved 2 of the tie down points to go through the outer frame instead of just the ply wood. We actually made those changes in my buddy's driveway before putting the Fatty on it.

The trailer is definitely happier carrying motorcycles on the street and not rough ass trails. That said, now that I have the truck and don't have any dirt bikes I'm probably going to be selling the trailer off. I haven't used the thing in months and other than my buddy's motorcycle the bed of the truck is more than capable of handling anything the trailer would haul.

Thanks.

Yeah, when it comes to the big 3 diesels it really doesn't matter. Dodge/Cummins, GM/Duramax, and Ford/International. They all have their goods and their bads. Personally a SuperDuty with a 24V Cummins and a 6spd Allison running a HP Kingpin D60 and full float 14bolt (removable pinion support style) would probably be my perfect truck.

That would be a dream truck. Put it on a f550 frame with a over drive unit and it would be perfect.
