Is this the area that Christo wants to drape his "art" project?

It's art to all the people that'll be profiting from it, mostly fabric sellers. ;)

The Christo thing is supposed to be over the Arkansas River near the top of the Royal Gorge. Its been "in the works" for over a decade now, so I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah, the Cristo thing is suppose to go in the canyon between Canon and Salida. the guy has never cleaned up his junk from previous projects. even though he claims he will. I dont want to see his crap all over the canyon. Lots of people up in arms here in Canon over the BLM letting him do it.

So I take it this is a different section of canyon then? The photos of the new monument look great. In regard to the Cristo thing, I just wish it would go away. I am sick of hearing about it.

Browns is different, its sort of just east of Mt. Princeton. Amazing rafting, beautiful and desolate. This really blocks housing developments along the river, which is why that one senator is so tweaked. Christo is an idiot, and his "art" simply sucks. I bet it's up for less than 24 hours before it gets torn down, depending on my drive time from Denver. :)

Yeah....Brown's is closer to Buena Vista then it is to Canon City. It starts a few miles downstream of Johnson Village (where we all meet for OCG trips usually). The river follows the Highway for a bit and then turns east and goes into Brown's Canyon and eventually returns to the Highway. You can raft that section of water in about 4 hours or so. Its a great Class III section of whitewater and is the most heavily used section on the Arkansas, which is the mostly heavily used River in Colorado for recreation (There are around 60-70 rafting companies that service the Arkansas River Valley).

Honestly, I have no problem with the "Over the River" project that Cristo is doing as long as it doesn't have a lasting impact on the river. To say that all of his projects suck is a bit harsh IMHO, though I don't look down on anyone for holding that view. As someone who grew up using this river and many others, it could be a very cool way to force people to look at the river in a different way, just as other projects that Cristo has done have challenged people to look at their community in a different way.

All of the problems are solvable, but as per usual the local community in the Ark Valley decided to be a pain in the butt rather then try and support it and make it work. It could have gone very differently with more community support. At the end of the day, Cristo and company were just looking to do something that attracted positive attention to the region, brought new people to see the beauty of Colorado and provide a source of revenue for the Valley that largely relies on Tourism to thrive.

That said, I'm much happier to hear about the National Monument designation then anything that Cristo is doing. The local rafting Community does a pretty decent job taking care of that area already, but I'm sure it will benefit from having the further protection that the designation provides.

My default position is opposition when it comes to designating more land as wilderness or quasi-wilderness. I have not looked into the specifics of Browns Canyon though. Hope it is a good thing. Clinton created the Grand Escalante Staircase N.M. by executive order. That closed at lot of backroads and trails according to the folks in that area.

As to Christo, all a man can do to the appearance of the Arkansas River and canyon is to make it look worse.

Kinda like a fine looking woman getting herself covered in tattoos.

You cannot improve on perfection.

Nothing is gained without a price. More federally "protected" land, more control, more closures. Likely, my political views are of the minority here and in this state so I'll leave it at that and not "thank" anyone. But it is beautiful territory; like most of CO west of the Front Range.
