The Mountaineers, Trailridge Runners, Big Thompson Four Wheels, and a few guests accomplished a lot at the Kelly Flats Trailhead today.

Started off seeding areas that had been recently graded to improve drainage of the parking areas.

While that was going on we started building the "bucks" for the buck and rail fence.

Then we started putting the fence together.

Lunch break- hotdogs, chilli, chips, BBQ beans, and potato salad.

We had enough people (about 40) that work progressed quickly.

The Trailridge Runners have a nice military trailer to haul tools and a generator.

We ran out of hardware so there are a few section left to instal. We will also be putting a few in on Sevenmile.

Looks like good work completed!

Last I spoke with FS, they were desiring to have a "pile" where pickup folks could back up to it to drive off/on bikes & quads. Any mention of such a thing to be installed?

The original plan for the trailhead included a concrete ramp for loading and unloading OHVs as well as a more robust surface (like compacted road-base) for the entire lot and painted parking spots. That was presented to the OHV grant program with the FS matching any grant received. Only a fraction of the requested grant amount was received so many items were removed and altered. Last I heard there was no plan for a loading/off loading ramp.

We are still working on getting permission to have a pot-o-let placed at the trailhead. The Mountaineers are proposing to cover all the associated costs.

Is Kelly flats open or is it a seasonal trail ??

It is seasonal. Normally opens around may 15 I think.

It usually opens by Memorial Day weekend. We are running in May 9th and 10th to check conditions.

Just curious...what is the stuff (looks like burlap) carefully placed? Does that somehow help with the seeding you did? I've never seen that.

I believe it is overcover that helps to keep the newly seeded soil intact as the grass(es) grow.

overcover helps to...
...reduce erosion from water and wind
...keep birds from eating the seed
...keep the soil a tad more moist (and warm) to aid germination

It does not get removed and simply decomposes. Grass grows through the overcover.

Exactly, they are like straw blankets that we rolled out over the seed. It also helps keep the seed from blowing away and birds from eating all of it.

That's great, that trailhead has needed some improvement but I didn't think it would be that extensive. It looks bigger, too. :thumb:

We finished the fence today and then ran the trail to see if it could be opened. Unfortunately it is still too muddy. Hopefully it will be open by next weekend.

I did get to take a brand new FS employee through The Chutes.
