Long story short - my block isn't looking so hot now I got is out and disassemble it. I'm not even sure it is worth taking to the machine shop to get checked out.

I found toyotatruckengine.com in the springs and they have some new and rebuilt short blocks for a reasonable price compared to buying another engine and doing the rebuild.

Anyone here have experience with them?

JDM engines man.
you can get Japanese demestic market engines for a song.
they will have 30-50k miles and be in good shape to say the least.
the older 3.0 inline 6 is what you want for your runner....
its some work to get it in there but a grand for the engine shipped to your door you cannot complain.
They may have some 22RE engines as well
last time I saw one it was $850 to a bussiness address.
Ya you got yo put you EGR equiped intake on it but other than that they will be low milage and in great shape.
complete pan to valve cover.

I'll be honest I've been thinking about that a lot too. Even before I started down the rebuild path. As much as I love the supra 7m-ge that inline is a super tight fit and I think there are better options if I do a swap like the 3rz out of a newer tacoma.
You did get me thinking about the 1uz-fe v8 out of the lexus sc400 however... I think I'll start looking around to see what I can find

Thank again. You where right and I got my head out of my 22re's butt and started thinking of better options.
