...Please get a grip:

Please don't make the rest of us afraid to go "out there" and PLEASE clean up your DAMN MESS! And those beer bottles you're blasting? (Oh, I'm so proud - my kid could hit a Pepsi can with a BB gun from 100 Yds away when she was 6).). Don't worry little boy, just sleep it off before you drive - and please... stow the gun properly. You DO know how to do that, right???
Yeah. I'm "in a "mood". Don't piss me off because I have a squirt gun and I know how to use it! :tisktisk:

A tragedy, no doubt. Keep in mind there are several gun enthusiasts here. To make a comment like that would be the equivalent of lumping you in with all the yahoos that go offtrail, drive on tundra, and destroy the back country simply because you have a Jeep. It's not right.

the first thing to note is "enthusiast" .... true and those people 99% of the time have no idea what they are doing and no business doing said activity like eric mentioned for the offroading "enthusiasts"
the second is the only good thing there is people need to clean up what they bring into the forest
the third is that thats mass media for you only reporting the "bad" things and its always biased to what sells and is made and edited that way
and the final is that this entire thread needs to be taken down as it serves no useful purpose and nothing good will come of it other than to serve the current social network generation of someone has a thing to say and must post it somewhere :thumb:

Sad story indeed. There are idiots in every realm of activity and since stupidity is on the rise and common sense is far less common anymore, only the lawyers will continue to win (I better stop driving). But I think we have a generally good group here as I've witnessed while shooting our little boy guns with a few of them whilst cleaning our mess after, so I'd tend to think you're barking up the wrong tree Jackie.
Of course, as is typical of useless mainstream media, you never hear of the almost equal instances where a firearm saves a life.

Pretty ambiguous then. I didn't see the story reference any particular suspect/shooter or mess left behind sooooo...?

Jackie has a link in the 1st post Fred. Short version: 60 year old man hanging around the campfire was killed by a stray bullet in a Rainbow Falls campground.
Personally I find the ATV drivers there pretty damned scary. I avoid the place.

Please don't make the rest of us afraid to go "out there" and PLEASE clean up your DAMN MESS!"Out there" has never been safe. I refuse to present any illusion that "anywhere" is safe.
No words will ever undo that family's tragedy, or fill the void left in it's wake. After watching my own father endure a slow and painful death (a good death none-the-less), I almost envy this family. This good man traversed the inevitable while doing something he loved, with the people he loved the most. Some people dream of such a departure.

I see that Chris, I read the entire article but I guess you and I (and apparently others here) are reading her post differently.

Really not a big deal, but does the title not say "Dear gun enthusiasts" and it's posted here on this forum? Guess I'm an idiot.

I get what your saying Jackie. I am a gun enthusiast and still clean up after these type of irresponsible people that perpetrated this crime twice a year, every year. I was appalled that they did not come forward. Of course now I'm not surprised. Sadly the days of personal responsibility are waning. I believe in Karma, I only hope she treats these people the same.

half the population is below average intelligence, many gun owners, just on average, are too stupid to be trusted with one. Check out drivers, same thing. I'm all for registered ballistics on every gun and liability insurance for every owner, just like cars. The dumbest thing I've heard anyone say about it was a guy at a rally on the news, he was confidently yelling that it was his second amendment rights, and you can't change the constitution!

This definitely is a sad on so many accounts, the situation for the family involved losing a loved one 1st and foremost, 2nd the ones that shot the firearm not coming forth and 3rd with understanding, the way the initial post was worded. As a side note as rapid as our population grows it is sad that intelligence and more so common sense has fallen way behind!
As a gun owner myself, as well as a good portion of gun owners out there we do practice safe and clean shooting practices and the media does savor the bad over the good stories of the day.
Classifying a group as a whole because of one bad apple has become the normal thing to do these days and yet completely wrong.

If we do that, I think we should extend the same requirement to the First Amendment.
The dumbest thing I've heard anyone say about it was a guy at a rally on the news, he was confidently yelling that it was his second amendment rights, and you can't change the constitution!
Bit of a pickle, huh? The Bill of Rights were written in a time where the right to bear arms meant single shot muzzle loaded rifles. Now we have semi automatic and fully automatic weapons readily available. And freedom of speech was when newspaper circulation was slow, extremely limited and communication between towns/states/countries was measured in days/weeks . Now we have instant access to unlimited amounts of information as it's happening around the world (or even low earth orbit) thanks to 24 hour cable news networks and the internet. We can go on internet forums/websites and spout off about whatever we want. Start limiting one, then it won't be long until the others are limited.
The fact is that this incident was an accident. How come anytime someone is tragically killed with a firearm people start talking about gun control and regulation or flat out bans? More people are killed in traffic every year and I have never heard someone rally around banning motor vehicles. Alcohol causes more problems than guns- where's the cries to ban that?
Java

extending it to the first amendment is not exactly the same, you can scream all day in the woods and none of your words are going to kill a grandfather sitting at the campfire. It would be nice to convict the shooter and have his insurance atleast pay for the funeral expenses, all ideaology aside. And that particular fellow could use some regulation, he's too stupid to be trusted, based on results. I'm not suggesting banning guns at all, I like guns. I'm for registration and insurance, just like cars. Because some people are stupid.
The guy on tv was an idiot because he's saying it's a 2nd amendment right and you can't change the constitution. He didn't get the contradiction, sort of shooting over his own head, so to speak. Like the irony of an anti-fracking bumper sticker. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amendment

The registering of guns is a tuff one. I really wouldn't want the government to know if I have a gun/guns. Its not any of the goverments buisness and i really dont want them to anything about me. I understand why some people would want to register guns. But that but its not really going to change anything. People will still do stupid stuff. If it had been a stray arrow that had killed him would you want to register every house hold that has a bow and arrow? People are going to commit stupid action's, you cant stop them from that. We have been trying stop people from driving drunk for years, have we been successful in that? Should we ban automobiles?

You can't regulate stupidity. What would be next... mandatory licensing and insurance to buy a book of matches?

Is there a serial number on any of my 5 gallon buckets? I consider myself a responsible citizen and would like to register my buckets. Should we put an minimum age on bucket ownership as well? I dont want one of my kids to carry one off and well have a bucket hurt another child. I know my kids would never hurt any one but well I guess you cant trust a bucket. Never know what a bucket is capable of.

Registration already happened when background checks were tightened, and that will likely change again. Everything- weed, *** marriage, *** military, emmisions requirements, changes. Alcohol was banned, now it isn't. Cars are banned in places, Mackinaw Island, the 16th street mall... everything changes. Gun laws will change, maybe even less regulation, maybe more, who knows. The only constant is change. Because of recent changes, if you own a gun, and filled out paperwork for a background check, you are part of that weapon's paper trail for life, you're in a few government databases, and you've given them more info than you do for a vehicle registration. If it goes truly Universal... http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2013/10/robert-farago/universal-background-checks-for-dummies/
I don't really care much about this, I just sort of got sucked in. I like guns, I don't like gun culture, and I don't have anything else worthwhile to say. I'm done with this thread. :thumb:

I saw this about a half mile up Cascade Creek, I'm pretty sure it is on public land. Good to know there are so many enthusiasts on this board, it will take some networking to clean up this mess.

A curious comment came to me today...
I volunteered at the Baker Draw / Pawnee shooting range this morning. Two of the three sets of lanes (50 & 100 yds) have wooden beamed / steel roofed sun shades. The 25 yard range might get one if/when funds become available.
We stained the outside facing wood, spread gravel where desired, walked the ranges to remove trash. A productive morning.
Back to the curious comment...
One of the gals there (a Tread Lightly person IIRC) said that many people drop refuse on public lands and then shooters shoot those refuse items. People walking by later see bullet hole riddled refuse and blame the shooters for the trash when it was originally someone else dropping refuse on public lands.
I thought the comment to be a curious one (an item I had not considered), but in the end, a person visited the public lands and left it looking worse than when they arrived / not leaving the place looking better for them being there.
Bottom line - (IMO) - education to make the world a better place where each of us visit.

Since I can't make this weekend's clean up run, I packed my Trasharoo full when I was out on a different trail yesterday. Probably a drop in the overall bucket.
I did see a couch dumped up there. I wasn't able to fit that.
