I am interested in going, I would need to see how things go with work (weather could put ne behind and force me to work Sat. but not likely) I am pretty sure the mine is off limits but would still make for a nice trip. If you are going to go ahead and put it on the calendar so we might get more interest.

I would never go into private property. It may be the mill that is in the Funtreks book. I only go where your permitted - Take photos. I am new to this - I will put it on the calendar tomorrow - I thought I had to have certain number of people interested before posting on the calendar.

As of last summer the buildings were listed as you may enter and take photos but don't take anything / leave all else as-is. A month or two ago (there are a few posts here) the mine buildings are blocked / off limits for "cleanup".

I imagine access to the top of both trails is open (though not positive) and that places that are off limits are posted / blocked to make it obvious where you may be.

Santiago mine is closed. As has been reportedly here previously, they are doing pollution clean up. The entrances are closed! STAY ON AUTHORIZED TRAILS.

Argentine and McClellan are open. See my run report from 9/5.

Reading up-dates from other threads is why I thought the mine area was closed. But I think the rest of the trails would still make a great trip.

Tom,

Thank you for the advice. I stated in the previous post that I would never enter an unauthorized area. I respect all rules about roads and access. If I didn't make that obvious, I do apologize. I respect all
private property signs and notes in jeeping books. I also respect the wisdom of you and other members of the group so I don't want to be a person who could threaten our access to public lands.
I promise that.

Thanks for the information. I still think it would be fun to see Greys and Torries from roads that are open.

Sean

Gee Whiz! Is the EPA at it again? That mine is not near a creek, is it?

Not really near a creek but everything flows downhill to a creek (and becomes drinking water).

I believe the goal is to save the buildings / have it be restored, possibly for historic use (only my wild guess), thus we need to "save the public" from their once a year visit / exposure to materials that have been sitting in the blowing winds and rains for 50+ years...

(I'll set my skeptics hat in the corner now)

It is a cool place. I'm hopeful it becomes an item to tour (beyond what we have already).

Yes, it is and IIRC it's been leaching chemicals into it forever.

.

When you're ready to retire the skeptics hat and graduate to tin foil just PM me, I'm sure I have an extra that'd fit you. I bet your prediction is spot on. I've seen them close, never seen them reopen anything. I think I heard they're going to open the mine areas up the week after the Grand Reopening of Left Hand.

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up. We will be running those trails Saturday as well, would join you but it is a special family day for us. I was adopted at birth and last year my biological family found me. My biological mom and half sister are coming out for a visit and wanting to get out. Look forward to meeting you at one of the viewpoints should we cross paths. My CB is still down but you can get my number off the rescue list (you should carry a printed version with you). Send me a text should you need anything.
