I've got a 1988 toyota pickup extra cab sr5 with the 3.0 and R150f transmission. I'm wondering if I need to move or extend the motor mounts on it?

My research has shown 1990 to 1995 you can fudge the mtr mounts already there. I can't really find any info on swaps for the 88-89 3.0s. offroadsollutions says the 88 3.0 mounts stay in one part of their site and says only the 90-95 the engine mounts stay in another. And Yota Tech, about as useful as an ******* on your elbow, with all the divergent answers and namecalling, doesn't say one way or the other. It seems like I shouldn't have to move'm for an 88 as compared to a 90. It seems the 3v and 5v are "mostly" the same , just different cam angle and heads, valve design, more OBDII etc. But they have the sameish block. Is there something I'm missing from the 88/89 3.0's to the 90-95 3.0's that you have to move mtr mounts? Kind of like when the 3.4v6 went to the passenger side oil dip stick in 03ish? Am I missing something or over thinking this? Probably the latter. :)

Another engine swap question too. Is it easier to do a sbc 350 on a V6 yota as compared to doing it on a 22r/e?
I know their is a lot going on swap wise with the Toyota to SBC. It seems I should already have all the bigger stuff, suspension and brake components, exhaust, stock or already added, that would make this mo betta and slightly cheaper, so all I would just have to do is get a 350 and turbo tranny and a custom drive shaft and move exhaust and motor mounts along with wiring etc. Almost the same as a 3.4 if you have to weld motor mounts in.

Sorry, I know there is A LOT of info on this I've searched and searched, but I'm new to full motor converions and just want to be sure before buying parts because I don't want to put new mounts on iffin I don't have too, and if I have to weld mounts, I'd rather go with the SBC horsepower.

Figured I'd ask here first before bugging and bombarding YotaJim's with questions.

I don't think there is anything different between the 88/89 3.0 and the 90+ 3.0. You just need to get the wiring info for the 1st gen as I am sure it is different than the 2nd gen.

I found this link:

http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=5995.0

It specifically discusses putting a 3.4 into a 89:

We are actually finishing up swapping, believe it or not a '97 3.4 motor into an '89 5spd 3.0 4x4 4Runner. It is really fairly simple. The key is to have everything on hand, then it can be done in a long weekend. Otherwise you can get hung up waiting on one little thing. To specifically answer your questions,

Motor Mounts: 3.0
Flywheel: 3.4
Clutch: 3.4
Fuel Lines: Flex Line Adapter from ORS (or custom made)
Body lift: a 2" body lift will allow ample clearance but you can also cut a hole in the hood or get a fiberglass bulge/scoop to graft onto your hood or just get a full fiberglass hood that has more clearance. I believe http://www.toyotafiberglass.com is working on a bulge hood for 3.4 swaps. We are cutting the hood out for now and can offer a downloadable template in .eps format very soon.

I'm sure you know that Off-Road Solutions offers "complete swap kits" and I'm sure you also know that they seem kinda pricey at $1,600. What you may not know is that the kit includes OEM Toyota parts including,

• Clutch
• Sparkplugs
• Oil Filter
• Radiator Hoses
• Vacuum lines
• misc other parts

and it also includes better than OEM quality custom

• HP PS line (with AN fittings)
• Sheet-metal Battery Tray (fits perfect)
• everything else needed to complete the swap (zip ties, brackets, etc)

If you want to source all of these parts yourself and/or reuse whatever you can from the donor motor, you can simply buy the conversion wiring harness for $650 which adapts the 3.4 engine harness to your trucks existing wiring. You do need the 3.4 ECU also of course.

Or if you are comfortable (and have time) with fairly involved electrical work, make your own harness and keep it really cheap!

We bought our '89 with 89K miles, a blown head gasket but otherwise good condition for $900 with intentions of swapping the 3.4 in. So we just got the ORS complete kit and wiring harness making for a slam dunk installation. By having new parts it also eliminates a lot of potential troubleshooting (headaches). The only thing holding us up is getting a custom cross-over made to let the exhaust run out the driver side like it's intended to on older trucks. You can route the exhaust out the passenger side but that will sacrifice ground clearance and risk damaging the exhaust. ORS is working on a custom cross-over as we speak. But any exhaust shop can make a nice custom one for a reasonable price.

Thank you, thank you Thank you!!! That is exactly what I was looking for. I didn't even know about marlincrawler boards. It answered all the other questions I had concerning ORS and the quality of their kit etc. I saw so much online and had hearsay of "a buddy of a buddy's cousin did this" in person, that I was confused by it and over thinking things. I owe you a beer or a blunt sometime. :thumb:

Now just to find a 3.4 with 120,000 or less miles on it...

That might be a hard task. Most of the 3.4 engines get driven a lot. It isn't unusual for them to see 400,000. My neighbor just replaced the short block on his at over 300,000. It apparently had a head gasket issue or something, and he decided to put in a brand new short block as part of the job.

This will be a good project and I hope you'll keep us in mind when it starts. Kinda partial to the '88!

How about one with under 150K on it? Have two sitting here at the shop. One already has the new oil pan, dip stick tube, etc, and is ready to drop in. The other is already in a 4Runner. Have wiring and computers for both. Even have a manual and an auto tranny to go with. Have complete wiring for both as well (manual or auto). Had a client back out of a build and now am left with lots of parts...

If interested, PM me.

That sucks man.............I would think that stuff shouldn't be too tough to unload though?

Not a bad thing. I carry a very long wait list and then got hurt last year, which pushed people out further. Most didn't have any issue. But some chose to go elsewhere in order to get the work completed quicker. In this case, I held onto parts, and parts rigs, and actually started prepping some for this project. Now that project won't be coming through the doors, so I need to find them another home at some point when I find time to deal with them. Either that I will be forced to put them into something myself, and I don't need anymore projects. :D
