Calling out firearms enthusiasts! I'm always looking to sharpen my shooting skills and learn new and different things.
I've gotten a decent amount of instruction in the past couple years and am finding that a lot of the best places, teachers, and classes can't be found as easily by Googling them as I'd like.
I'm hoping some of you might have gotten some instruction you'd recommend that's a tad beyond the basic, and focuses more on practical instruction than classroom time. I prefer to shoot outdoors and steel, but understand that isn't always an option. Mostly looking for 'tactical' style instruction for AR and pistol but would also like to become more proficient with large(r) caliber long-range shooting.
Thanks for the $.02 in advance!

I well recommend John Harrell.
Nice, easy going attitude with good info at the fore.
He has classes at the Rocky Mountain Shooters Supply in Fort Collins (CO 14 & I-25 - 1/2 mile west, south side of the road).
While RMSS has their own 8-lane live fire range, his "simulation range" is the focus. You stand in front of a wall to wall screen, gun in hand, and react to the real-life scenario in front of you. Shoot/NoShoot along with proficiency.
A live fire range is good for the muscles for good target hits. The simulation range is good for the brain.
I believe he has an outdoor rifle/AR tactical class coming up (class I or II I don't recall). He offers a range of training classes. I can PM his eMail if you wish it.
Here is info for his sites (DoubleTap & FiTS simulator):

I have a private lesson at least every month at BluCore for years now. Just me and my instructor in the 4-bay, moving and shooting, good targets, bad (quick decision skills), distractions, presenting from concealment, slung AR, shotgun. weak hand, one handed, low light, close range, turn and shoot; you name it, we do it. Muscle memory and trigger discipline is what you seek to develop if you're looking to hone your skills for real world carry concealment. But if you prefer more long range, they do have a 100yd range and they'll handle any aspect you want to get better at.

I well recommend John Harrell.
What a SMALL.... SMALL world. I worked for John as one of my first jobs after moving to Denver back in 2009- but it was nothing related to 4x4, OR firearms.
He worked for a company called Deltek in Loveland/Foco area at the time, and they were migrating to Telecommuting- and were completely downsizing their officespace. I worked with John to dismantle network racks, wipe hard drives on many computers, and do general cleanup of any and all IT equipment they had.
Great guy to work with, and for - though it was for only a couple of months.

Sounds right to me. I'm in IT and we've discussed his day job on occasion.

does anyone know if there a 1000+ yard range anywhere in the Springs or Denver area?

I'm going to chase down John, Ft Collins wouldn't be the farthest I'd gone for instruction before. Thanks for the recommendation! I think the Magpul stuff in WY is a tad too far, and might be too physically demanding given my current health considerations.
I've taken training from:
Kenaz Tactical Group (http://www.ktgfirearms.com/) - Defensive Pistol 1 - good guy, lots of range time, not a huge fan of the Dragonman's venue. I'm hoping to get more instruction from him when the weather improves.
PTDSS (http://pdtss.com/)- great guy, nice open area (east of c.springs) paper and steel targets. LOTS of drills. Sort of one and done though, might consider an every other year kind of 'class'
TacOne (http://www.taconeconsulting.com/)- Tactical Pisto (http://www.taconeconsulting.com/tactical-pistol/)l was my favorite class yet, I'm in the video on the class page :) won the competition at the end of the class. Joe was a great instructor, lots of variety, good setup. REALLY hoping he does a carbine class sometime soon, but might take this again with a friend.
Centennial Gun Club - Tier 1 tac (no longer offered apparently) was too much classroom, not enough range. Good info, but I can read at home, I pay for the range time. 8 hours on site, 3 on the range. The instructors were top notch, nice facility. Did learn a lot about different methods for reloads, gear setup etc. that def stuck with me.
Centennial Gun Club - I'm signed up for the low-light pistol class at the end of Feb, am intrigued to see how it goes.
BluCore - Level 1 Rifle - I'm signed up in a couple weeks. Weekday only instruction is difficult for me, and I'm not thrilled they refuse to accept any level of prior instruction. I can't get over there on nights where solo instruction is available, so I'm hoping it's a great experience.
Fixed Sight Training (http://www.fixedsighttraining.com/) - worked with him and my .308 on his 500-yard range. Started close, worked back. Talked a lot about ballistics (got my ammo type in advance, brought charts with him which was AWESOME) and setup. He helped re-secure and fit my scope to me and the rifle. Shot steel, he was awesome on the spotting scope. Had a great mobile bench, and with his truck we didn't have to walk back and forth which was really nice. Good open private space too.
I'd like to try the Makhaira Group in the springs this summer.

Not in the Denver area - north about an hour...

Took the Rifle 1 class at BluCore last night. Instruction was good, but their range setup is AWFUL. 7' high concrete ceiling, concrete floor, and cinder block walls. It was an echo chamber that not even doubled up ear-pro could make comfortable.
