New route being developed from Montrose to Moab, I haven't heard of anyone doing it yet...

"The Rimrocker Trail is a 161 mile designated route connecting Montrose, Colorado and Moab, Utah. A vast majority of the trail travels through remote and rugged public lands.

An interactive map journal to showcase and provide information and photos for the 166 mi ATV/OHV/4-wheel drive, high clearance Rimrocker Trail between
Montrose, CO and Moab, UT in a format that guides the user easily through the application. The purpose of this map is to provide prospective trail users with an overview of the route and the landscape through which it travels, as well as to provide helpful information about the various roads that interconnect with the trail, traveler amenities and supplies, and area attractions. The map features include the trail route, roads, mile markers, public lands, rivers & streams, and place name points. "

found this, it give a lot more detail. I really don't know if it's going to be cool or just an effort to get $$ into other areas, I'm looking forward to a trip report. I cant find anything about the roads except the little bit of Divide Rd. I hope it's a gem!!

it sounds like it's more about $$ than passion, but the route could still be awesome...

"Montrose County, Colorado officials are making headway on the “Rimrocker Trail,” a 166-mile continuous route from the Montrose area to Moab, open to four-wheel drive, off-highway vehicles, and bicycles. In a presentation to the Grand County Council on Feb. 16, Montrose County officials called the route a potential “relief valve” for motorized use in Moab, and said they hope the trail will bring more tourists into the western Colorado area.

“To the extent that there’s an overabundance of motorized use in Moab at any given time, we’d offer this as a relief valve. Feel free to send those folks over the hill into Nucla and Naturita,” said Montrose County Government Affairs Director Jon Waschbusch. “I mean it sincerely that those communities are making an effort in being more accommodating to outdoor recreation and tourism and we’d certainly be glad to have the overflow.”

Sounds very similar to the Paradox Trail portion of The Grand Loop.

I've done part of it. This type of trail is really more "dirt road" than trail. 200 miles of range should be no problem.

Just wanted to let everyone who might want to do this trail know that
in Montrose when we went to the Windy's to eat lunch (right by the road
where the trail begins there in a BLM visitor center where you can obtain
a.very nice map of the Rim Rocker Trail. (During business hrs.) Jan went
over and got it while we gassed up,

They are expanding this to form a loop with what looks like basically the Kokopelli Trail and calling it all Rimrocker. Interesting...

"Below are some comments that show some confusion with what the Rim Rocker Trail is and what to expect.

First, the Rim Rocker is not a typical “Jeep trail”. It is mostly an easy-going trail meant more as an Overlanding trail. When complete, it will traverse several diverse terrains, historical types, and scenic values. Below, I will answer some of the comments.


William Eakins Sounds like these will be signed spurs off the main RR route to/from Fruita etc vs a trail direct from Fruita to Moab.


Wrong!! We are not using “spurs” at all. The extensions are on existing designated full-size motorized trails. We do use sections of named trails like the Kokopelli and Tabeguache, but there are many miles of unnamed trails.


Will the additions be different than existing Kokopelli from Moab to Fruita and Tabeguache from GJ to Montrose?


We are using sections of both trails.


That is awesome!! Has anyone done the current trail? I’d heard conflicting reports that it was kind of boring but have been interested.


The existing RR trail is mostly a well-graded two-lane wide dirt road. It is quite scenic if you can drive and do some safe gawking at the same time. Closer to Utah, the trail gets more “Jeepy” but is still not particularly technical."
