View Full Version : Moody Hill/Kelly Flats - mid-late June TBD

I thought I'd get out in front of some of our busy schedules and see if there is interest in running Moody Hill and Kelly Flats sometime in June, possibly late June around the 24th-26th. The trails aren't yet open (according to the National Forestry sites) but by mid-to-late June that should change, I hope. Unless anyone knows of permanent closures for either trails (?)

If we get some traction with interests, I'll post it in the "Planned Trail Run" area and with firmed-up dates, meeting times, meeting location, etc. For some of us, this may evolve into a 2-day trip if camping is involved or other trails in the area need exploration; hence the month+ planning ahead.

I should be ready to go by then. Although, I'd likely only be in for Sunday or maybe a late Saturday start and meeting up at a campsite.

I heard June 15th is the magic date for the trails to open up here.

Any big work project on your list for the opening?

Last season was the CO14 trailhead fencing & parking lot iirc.

The Mountaineers.

No big work projects for Kelly Flats but we will be installing some buck and rail fence on Sevenmile. We are going to look at the concrete at the top of Heart Attack Hill and decide what needs to be done. Might need to add some concrete to the bottom ledge.

You are correct, we did the trail head work last year.

We are also working with the Forest Service to allow us to place a port-o-john at the trail head of Kelly Flats.

To clarify I am talking about the ledge that is now at the bottom of the concrete near the top. I agree that it makes a challenge and I'd like to leave it but the FS might see it as too dangerous.

I am not sure which day we will be running which trail but it will be the 21st and 22nd. We leave the campground at 9 am each day. Guest are always welcome but we will put you to work. :D

Yeah I knew it would be a work day. I don't mind working to help the trail.

The Mountaineers.

I've been thinking about checking out the group since I'm in the area - worth me making the time for it? Looks like its only a meeting and trip per month so it hard for me to catch one ( this month already has a conflict for the meeting time now) so it seems like it would take forever for me to get enough time to feel it out.

I would be interested in doing Kelly Flats and tag along on the other trail. When we did Moody trail last year, the quarry was fun. The road to Crystal Mountain
was closed and we were forced to head back to the highway.
