Looks like a pretty clean rig! Probably needs some attention.

Or if you prefer a 2000 model, here is one for $650 needing at least a timing chain!

2 different 4.0 motors offered starting in '97. The OHV, which goes all the way back to 1991, the 1st year of the Explorer, and the better of the 2 motors IMO. The other 4.0, which the second Explorer obviously has is the SOHC. They squeezed a few more ponies out of it, BUT the timing chain tensioners and guides are prone to breakage. There's one in the front of the motor, and one at the back. Only way to change the one in back is to pull the motor or trans. Both of ours have the OHV. I'm not against the SOHC as long as it's under 100k miles. It's rare to find one over 200k that has not had tensioner and guide problems. As long as Explorer #1 is an OHV and was at least well maintained (obviously it wasn't well repaired) then not a bad deal. Explorer #2, you're pulling the motor or the trans just to get it to run.
