What oil does an AX-15 take for trans oil? I've read that people us 75W90 GL3 but the new standard or suggestion is 10W30. I've also read people have used ATF. The guys a NAPA said there database has 75w90 as the oil. I'm not really sure what to go with and if anyone has any experience could lend some advice it would be appreciated!

75w-90 gl4-gl5 is your go to.
We have a full synthetic 75w-140 GL4 that is amazing!

Wouldn't think you would need GL3 for such a newer transmission. Its expensive and harder to find (Sta-Lube GL3 can be found through NAPA), but works well for some of the older transmissions and so forth (like my 1970 D18) that have lots of soft brass parts (synchronizers). The newer GL4 and GL5 stuff can cause some deterioration of these old brass parts, although its not a huge issue even then.

AX-15 originally used GL3 gear oil but that is no longer widely available. The GL4/5 have too much sulfur and will corrode the synchros. Jeep put out a TSB to use 10W30 instead, which one can find online ( I don't have access to that TSB file right now to post ). I also called the local dealership to verify the information. I ran full synthetic 10W30 in my 99TJ.

Its amazing how many older transmission used 10w30
the old GETRAG trans in the 1st gen dodge behind the cummins used 10w30 from the factory
our rebuilder tell us to use 10w30 in the new prosseces transfer cases as well.

This is what I read on JeepFourm and seen on Facebook.

Just called a dealership and they said you can use 75w90 or 10w30.

I mistakenly put reg gear oil in mine. Found out that the sncros are made of a soft metal and require a certain type of oil. Redline MT-90 even though expensive, it was the closest to what they originally used. Works great now.

A good advantage of this is that it simplifies trail spares. I recently switched my engine and transfer case to Mobil 1 10w30 and my transmission to RP Syncromax. I read that all 3 can use synthetic 5w30 or 10w30 so that's all I carry for trail fluids for all my geared stuff, a 5 quart Mobil 1, and some power steering and brake fluids. I'd use it in my diffs to get home too.
