On Sunday September 25th some of the Mountaineers went out on a recovery to one of our Adopt-a-Trails, Kelly Flats to recover a rolled Toyota Tocoma from Heart Attack Hill.

Fortunately this recovery was also done with the driver of the vehicle present, as from looking at the vehicle you would not think anyone could of survived. They rolled an estimated 12-15 times ending up roughly 600' from the first roll. The driver was ejected about 1/2 way down while the passenger was inside for the entire ride. They both were extremely lucky as this could of ended much worse then it did. Both walked away with only cuts and bruises. There ordeal started with attempting Heart Attack hill when the vehicle stalled and begun to roll backwards. The rear tire went into a hole causing them to loose control and slide sideways starting the rollover.

Recovery Vehicles were positioned off-trail to make the recovery safer with permission from the Forest Service, this by no means says it is ok to go off trail and should never do so without permission from the proper people.

They roll started just below the largest tress on the ridge.

Stretching out winch lines and straps, it was about 250' from the trail to the vehicle.

We used 4 rigs to winch the vehicle up. Two pulling with two as anchors to keep them from moving. Maybe a little overkill but we wanted to make it as easy as possible.

Once in the parking lot the owner and his dad loaded it onto a trailer.

Overall it went very smooth and didn't take too long. About 3 hours from the time we got to the trail until we were back at the parking lot.

Nice work! Glad that it was done safely, with all the permissions needed, and that the debris was cleaned up to leave no trace. Also glad that it got done before Winter set in.

Not sure there is much to salvage, but if the owner wants to sell any parts off it, I may be interested. Unsure if you have his contact info.

All I know is that he lives in Cheyenne.

Ah. That is a trek. I noticed the WY plates, but figured maybe he had moved to CO or something.

Cheyenne is a tad closer to Kelly Flats than Longmont - a curious tidbit. Mental ramble: Moving from Illinois I consider Cheyenne to be "the middle of nowhere". Fort Collins is only a 40 minute drive from the middle of nowhere...

The real Q: Pulling the truck up the slope - as well as pulling it on the trail - were the front wheels able to be turned / were the front wheels a hassle in making the truck NOT want to go where you wanted it to go?

newracer

The front wheels did not want to turn because the A pillar was crushed down against the steering wheel. Also the tie rod was pretty bent. Both drivers side tires were also flat. It didn't cause much problem pulling it up the hill. By time we got to the top the wheels were almost straight. Going down the trail they just muscled it where they wanted it to go, the straps were short enough it worked fine. To get it on the trailer straight we had to muscle the wheels a few times.

Kinda sad to lose a nice rig like that. Glad everybody walked away, that the most important thing.
Nice recovery. ..

Great recovery. Looks like it was a really nice rig, prior. Amazing (and what a huge relief) that the people inside weren't seriously injured.

Man that truck looks like it killed it's passengers. Glad they were "OK" considering. Sucks to see the truck ruined.

Reminds me of the time we went up to Bill Moore Lake (or was it Red Elephant Hill?) to recover a truck that rolled down a hill like this. Fun times!

edit: It was on May 26th, 2013. I looked up some pictures, but I didn't take any good ones. Jim may be able to.

Interesting, this is the second time I've seen some of these pics. My Bro-in-law Scott is the goomba with the big white double cab Chevy, and his buddy Nate assisting.
