I am proud to say that this will be the 9th year (holy cow!) that we are conducting this run! This has been a great opportunity to get together in the past, without truly doing a "run", and I am sure this year will be great! It is a great social event, and a good way to give back to the community.
What does the Denver Rescue Mission shelter do with all the turkeys you ask? They need 15,000 birds to feed homeless who come into the shelter, they distribute to other smaller shelters (DRM is the biggest shelter in Denver) which may run low on birds, distribute to low income families, etc. Basically, they make sure that everybody who needs a meal at Thanksgiving gets one, regardless of their situation.
The shelter also needs other items including but not limited to canned goods, dry food goods, clothes, coats, blankets, hats, gloves, sleeping bags, personal hygiene items, etc. My understanding is that they accept nearly anything except appliances.
In addition to all meeting up to drop off piles of frozen turkeys, if people are agreeable, we will plan a breakfast afterwards at a local breakfast spot downtown. Not all those who donate are required to attend breakfast.
At this time, if you are interested, I simply need to know if we should do this Saturday November 19th or Sunday November 20th (weekend before Thanksgiving). The "typical" meet time downtown Denver is 9:00AM.

I'm open for either date at this time and plan to invite my neighborhood to contribute and/or participate if they wish.
Thanks for posting, Jeff!

I forgot to mention that Kings Soopers started their turkey sale for the season. They are $.79 a pound, so a 20 pound turkey will be just under $16. There are smaller turkeys of course too.

Without hijacking this thread I think we should all thank Jeff (Patrolman) for putting this together for what will be his 9th year!
Thank you Jeff! :thumb:

BUMP for interaction. Yes/No/Maybe??? Let's do this right! Let's let the community know that we care! We are a great group of friends with an extended reach to other great people who may or may not share our love of the dirt and rocks! (But everybody loves a good Thanksgiving dinner)!!! Let's do our best to not let anyone go hungry.:GroupHug:

I'm a bit sad that we have SO MANY members - (but so few volunteers). I get it. A lot of us are going through hard times (me included). But this event does make you feel good and it's a great opportunity for new members to meet older members and give to a worthy cause. Step up if you can folks and show up with a bird or some canned goods from your pantry - it all helps!
Got an old jacket or blanket that hasn't been used in years??? Don't throw it away! Someone else NEEDS that old thing! Have your kids out-grown some of their clothes? Is that old suit or dress you can't fit into anymore taking up space in your closet? Either give it to another member to deliver to the mission for you or bring it yourself. (You'll feel good about it - I promise)!

Thanks Jackie. I actually ran out of room in my freezer over the weekend. Took the 8 turkeys down to the shelter Monday afternoon. That was along with an old bike, a large rock-n-roll poster, a big box of CFL lightbulbs (we converted to LED), and some other odds and ends. I already started to stockpile the freezer again to take turkeys down on Saturday! Looking forward to seeing everyone.

I'm going to make a point to support this. My back is really hurting me (2 weeks now I've been gimped up) so i'm going to tough it out and hopefully get some good karma going.
Time to step up for people in need boys and girls.

That's GREAT, Jeff! So far I have only two birds and a bag of my daughters clothing that no longer fit her. I have yet to go through some of our closets looking for old shoes, boots and jackets but I bet I come up with more. I also have to go through the pantry. If I can get Annika motivated enough, I might have a bag of stuffies, books and games for the kids! (I'll be busy tomorrow night)!
