Yup it's a FORD heritage f250. So the F150 a little growed up.
Rear axle is the small ring and pinion sterling full floater.
But still the small body style 5.4 tritan with the same trans as the F150 with the 5.4 tritan
There kind of a ******* child of a truck.

I think I remember reading about them once, but never noticed one in person. I think they were a Dana 55 maybe? The article was talking about a conversion to 8 lug axle shafts that make it comparable to a Dana 60 if I remember right.

The thing that stuck out most in my mind is that these were POS axles. If you have one, probably worth modifying it. If you DON'T have one, it isn't a good candidate to do any sort of a swap.

I can only scratch my head and wonder WHY?

Almost certainly because it met the requirements for the load capacity, and was cheaper to manufacture than an 8 lug axle (few lugs, thinner axle shafts, etc). Cheaper is better from the accounting perspective. Bean counters have screwed up a LOT of things in Detroit over the years.
