It appears that my flywheel did was not previously bolted to the crank output using lock washers. Going with new grade 8 bolts - add lockwashers or just put some locktite and torque to specifications?

Definitely no to the lock washers. Past that, take one of the old bolts and compare it to your replacement. These bolts typically have a larger head to increase the contact area between the bolt head and the flywheel.

Thanks Mike - what I pulled out is a standard grade 8 hex bolt. After a bit of research it should have flywheel bolt with special head - so I ordered a set. Thanks for pointing that out. The set looks like it comes with external point lock ring which according to a number of earlycj5 forum members is correct. Of course, we'll see what I actually get.

Mike hit it on the head.
Flywheel bolts will have a bigger head to help with clampping it down.
As for locktight no red!
Use numatic locktight, it's stronger than the blue but won't need heat to remove, use a 1/2 impact gun and bam it's out.
We use a small chain from the flywheel to the he'll house so we can put the right torque on the bolts.
Good luck with you install, we hope to see you this spring with you fresh engine.
