This is pretty much a dream vehicle for me - its a 1972 cj6 with v8. Although I generally prefer the looks of the pre-72 'short-nose' cjs, there is a lot of advantages to the early amc cjs from 72-75 (aka intermediates). Haven't seen a lot of these with v8s. Factory equipment includes power saginaw steering (a huge upgrade over the ross steering), D30 front axle with 11 inch brakes (another nice upgrade over the pre-71s with D27). This cj6 probably can turn the same radius as my short cj5. Rear is strong flanged D44 with 11 inch brakes, but centered to go with the T15 3speed and D20 TC - super strong components although not the best crawl ratio. Also comes with OEM rear gas tank - bigger and better than underseat inside cab tank of the pre-71s. Almost forgot - has hanging pedals with firewall mounted master cylinder as opposed to the through the floor pedals with frame mounted MC and pedal pivot. These frame mounted pieces make fitting any frame mounted sliders rather difficult to squeeze in - but this one can fit just about anything you can dream up.

The two weaknesses of this jeep are the c-channel frame with narrow inboard springs (same as all the previous cjs) and the somewhat pathetic crawl ratio (even with 4.27s).

I'd fly out and drive it back for you!!

Its a lot of money - and I would want to mess it up by lifting it, rollcage etc. I need a cheaper one that I can box the frame, lift it, probably cut the floor pans a bit to fit a 4 speed with crawl gear etc. Or just find a cj8 that would work as well...

I sold my 66 CJ-6 about 15 years ago. It was an interesting ride. Super modified, so it was at the point where making more mods wasn't a big deal. You see the CJ-6 pop up every so often here in Denver. Hopefully you can find a rig that fits your needs. The additional wheelbase and interior space sure is nice!

The 66 cj6 in foco is a 4cyl - otherwise looks very nice - its been posted on and off for well over a year. Would need a lot of work and money to get it to what I would want it to be (35s and locked) and not break apart. The 72cj6 out west caught my attention as well. The CL add doesn't show much - like is it a 232 or a 258. What is the transmission (T14 vs T18). I thought it had some potential...a fellow ecj5 member in Delta went to take a look. Said stay away - its a bondo jeep over lots of rust. Don't know him all that well...I would definitely go a take a look if it were closer.

If the one in Seattle is “real”, low miles and as clean as it looks, it should be worth a look.

This one has potential: https://lewiston.craigslist.org/cto/d/rare-jeep-cj6/6412512864.html
I of course like the v6 but it has some concerns for build like this.
All the 71 and earlier would need transmission, brake, steering and front axle work or swaps. The 72 and after still need some work as well - but a lot of it is easier and less wholesale swapping.

That was the great thing about my 66. It had a shackle reversal, spring over with YJ leafs, the front part of the frame was boxed, power steering, etc. It was on 35's so those were all worth-while mods. That was the only way to make it "driveable". So glad all the work was done professionally prior to when I got it.

I like the plain ole black and white.....
They all seem pretty sweet old jeeps though
For me if I were to get anything it'd have to be the old Army cj if they are even called a cj
And I'd have to be sure it was still green with hood star and unit numbers !!!
I am Army !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Pretty much what I would be looking to do...not realistically in the cards. More likely to find a driveable cj8 that I can work on slowly while wheeling it. But I also think the current cj5 is doing pretty well...and it certainly could use some of those big upgrades as well. Just not sure I wan't to invest all that money into such a short wheelbase vehicle.

Here is a built cj8 - I like it except is probably a bit overbuilt for my interests.
https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/jeep-cj8-scrambler-built-rock/6419965984.html

Maybe with 37s...and could be street driven some of the time (to and from trails here in Colo).
Out of my pricerange but probably couldn't build it for 25k which is about what I think it would sell for. I think newracer has a nice tj for sale that is a great deal for a nicely built rig - I hate buying some else's build and not doing it myself, but its probably the most cost-effective way to go.

And just for fun...this one has slowly been coming down in price and fits my build interests more. The 4.2 would probably be a bit overmatched with 35s, but an EFI 4.0 might be doable as a swap somewhere down the line (and all the TC issues that come with that).

The CJ8 is going to have a lot more aftermarket support. Since you are looking at those, you could consider an LJ for a comparable price, right? Looks like they wouldn't be too hard to find in the $12-$15k range. You probably get about the same cargo space as a CJ6 or CJ8.

Of course! Hadn't seen the blue one. In general the red one has a decent stance etc (but the gold wheels gotta go). But I am not as familiar with the LJ options - like the Rubi models came with D44 rear and maybe front with lockers. Did all the models come at least with D44 rear and D30 front - or were there still some D35 rears being used? The Rubi also came with 4.10 gears and a 4:1 TC, not sure what the other models came with. The 4.0 with 35s is going to need as much gearing as possible - and 3.73 or whatever wont cut it. But, then again, the 4.10s might not be enough so if you going to replace then its better to start a lower price point.

Yes - but at least it doesn't have 4 doors :lmao:

AFAIK, all LJs come with D44 rear. The regular unlimited model has D30 front, but I think the Rubicon has a beefier front. Should get lockers in the Rubi, also. My unlimited has no lockers, but did come with a LSD, which I'm sure is useless by now.

I was just kidding about the LJ a bit. Not as "classic" as a CJ, but from a price perspective, they are comparable. Not to mention easier to find parts for, a smoother ride, and probably more reliable.

I like the LJs - generally they have been pretty pricey (mostly the Rubi models that I have checked out). But seems that there are definitely a few more of them around and the prices are more reasonable. And the continuing popularity and availability of the 4dr jk may be helping more of them pop up. Can probably find a good LJ for the same expense as a CJ8 - but yea - it does lack a certain old iron feel. A good friend of mine has a 2004 TJ Rubi that is certainly a great ride. He runs 32+ tires and it DDs nicely and wheels nicely. Ride quality on the coil set-up is not even comparable to old leafs - even a big improvement over the YJ which with its wide softer leaves and wider stance/frame was a big improvement on cjs.

I look a lot more than I ever buy - but you never know when the must have comes around at a must have price.

James the LJ would be huge upgrade for you.
Other than the lack of V8 power they are great. The ride is nice

I needed more space and don't want to be under things that much right now.

Fwiw, I'm in Littleton checking out a factory LJ top. The owner seems to be a Jeep flipper, and plans to sell the LJ with 74k miles. The Jeep looked pretty good, but I wasn't inspecting to buy....

A few more pictures. What looks like a tach in the second photo is fuel economy gauge. I haven't investigated how it works, but my guess is that there is a vacuum gauge somewhere that relays a signal to the gauge. Its operational and is illuminated with the light switch. The gauge is operation and interesting, but not real useful. http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?attachments/1972_jeep_cj6_15618806849e1fe650e22img_1566_dxo-jpg.51380/ http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?attachments/1972_jeep_cj6_156188089828b5689img_1629_dxo-jpg.51381/ http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?attachments/1972_jeep_cj6_1562788311647fa9img_4947-jpg.51382/
