"The name Munga comes from the German phrase Mehrzweck UNiversal Geländewagen mit Allradantrieb, which translates as "multi-purpose universal cross-country car with all-wheel drive"

That is an unusual ride for sure.

Not sure if Audi and VW were "together" back then, but it almost looks like the base to the VW 181, also known as "The Thing".

Yep, these are somewhat based on a Thing. They have a VW Fox engine if I remember right. I have seen several, but it has been years. They are very unique for sure.

I'd say it was the other way around. The Thing may have been based on the Munga since the Munga was made from 56-68 and the Thing from 68-83.

Wasn't there a WWII era military version of something similar to the Thing? I think it was rear engine and air cooled. I am pretty sure the Munga is front engine and water cooled (last ones I saw were 20 years ago). Maybe that makes it a mid-way stop between the WWII version and the civilian Thing.

Yes, the predecessor to the Thing, the Kubelwagen. Air cooled flat 4.

VW took over Audi in 1965 which may explain some of the similarities in models around that time frame.
