Now that the new century is 18.25% over, I am inheriting an alleged "smart phone." My question is, how do I protect it from the environments that I work and play in?

Otterbox Defender

Then rip the "plastic screen" out of the new Otterbox shell and place some gorilla glass on the smart phone

The glass I used (there might be better stuff out now):

I can highly recommend their belt holster as well - I don't recall a single "pop-n-drop". If it's clicked in - it's secure.

x2 on Otterbox - that's what I had for mine, for wheeling and running. Even took it kayaking, so I could take pictures!

Awesome, congrats on the hand-me-down! A cheap/free upgrade is always nice!

As others have pointed out, a decent case and screen protector should be all you'd need. My wife had an S4 until Thanksgiving of this past year. She used the Otter Box that offered the most protection, and then an off brand clear screen protector. Lasted her many years and it actually still functions well, but the battery life is horrible.

Some days, I hate the learning curve!

Three cheers for the Otterbox! This evening I was showing someone else how Klutz-proof it is by dropping my phone from my waist and watching it bounce across the floor, again...

In regards to the "antiquated" S4, it is like a new pair of shoes, or hand-me-down blue jeans: I'm still growing into it, but, dang! It is like having a work station strapped to my belt, I like it!

I purposely took a smaller hand-me-down phone. It prevents me from waisting a lot of time playing, when I should be working.

Three cheers for the Otterbox!

When James and I were airing up after Top of the World at Dewey Bridge I had my cell phone out - and set it on the jeep (front left fender perhaps). We were talking / I forgot it was where it was and drove over to the north side of the bridge - and back - and headed south on 128 a mile or two - and started to do an equipment check - where's the phone??? Pull off the road for an extensive check - no phone. Backtrack on 128 looking for a black phone likely in pieces - nope. Kept backtracking to the gravel parking area for the north side of dewey bridge and it was in the gravel. No lasting scratch or other damage to the phone PFEW!!!! Hip-Hip-Horray Otterbox!!!!

I purposely took a smaller hand-me-down phone. It prevents me from wasting a lot of time playing, when I should be working. All I played was a bunch of music files that I transfered from my PC. It turns out a hard hat flipped upside down makes a pretty good passive amplifier. ;)

I was my (former) Company's primary installer at the Denver Premium Outlets. Toward the end of the project I had already transferred my plan sets to a small, hand-me-down tablet. When I had a handful of installers show up at crunch-time, we logged into the wi-fi so that I could email them links to plan sets I had loaded in my google drive, while simultaneously updating 3 differents lists on "S memo," 2 different email strings with the Site Super, Project Engineer & Architect, taking pictures of completed work, texting updates to my PM, and talking on the phone with the installers who didn't do so well with plan sets.

Like I said, I'm still growing into this technology. :)

So as of now the best phone I have had is my current Motto z2 edge
The screen has taken some fresh slag like still molten slag not an issue.
Granted there is a hole there but all works very well and no discoloration.
As well as a mechanic you can imagine the abuse this phone takes.
Dropping of things, the different types of chemicals that I play with.
As well being around the newer welders, some phone will get whipped out....

Welcome to the electronic leash to the world
