I have a 1994 YJ. It has 33 inch tires and a 6 inch lift. I am not looking to go road warrier rock climbing, just go on some back roads fun jeeping with the wife. Should I see if someone would like to trade for 31's and maybe a two inch lift? What say you? Thanks, Don

Play with your toy for a while, then decide if that is something you want to do. I think it would be a shame to change out only to want it all back next year. Just my two cents.

33s are good...wouldn't drop to 31s unless you are underpowered/undergeared. 6 inch seems like a lot just to clear 33s...but YJs do need more lift than other cj tj jk etc. Member Jim has a YJ that runs 35s, and he can probably give a good idea has to how much lift would be needed for just 33s.

It is also true that you can run a lot of easy to moderate trails with 31-32s on a short wheelbase vehicle like a jeep YJ. If you do drop you will get a bit of fuel mileage and performance improvement. You will probably need a 2-3 inch lift on a YJ to run 31-32s. You could probably find such lift springs reasonably cheap via CL or FN jeep or Jeeps Unlimited up in Erie, CO. With 33s on easy to moderate trails, you won't have any concerns - rock sliders and other skid protection won't be all that necessary. With 31s on moderate trails, you'll probably want some sliders.

6" is a lot for 33s. I had a YJ with 2.5" springs, a front shackle reversal and 1" lift rear shackles on it, 33s cleared well. That came out to about 3.5" lift with a 2" longer wheelbase from the shackle reversal.

I second the motion. Play out the season as-is and use the down-time (winter) to plot changes to your wallet.

FWIW, the YJ has BDS 3-1/2" lift via springs and 3" body lift with 35's.
