So I have had the Magellan TRX-7 for over a year now. It is supposed to be the best of the best. It is not, I have had no luck with it. The trails are hit or miss and the customer service is even worse. Any suggestions?

I use two:

Garmin GPS V

It's a small, monochrome screen portable unit. I use it mainly to record where I've been (download track info after the fact). I could use it for "overview" of where I'm at and perhaps for some emergency use / backup use (it's more rugged and portable than the tablet).

True GPS enabled Android tablet with Avenza's Map app with geospacialized trail maps

This is my primary trail map. Large screen, loaded with almost all Colorado and Moab trails. It seems more folks are going this way (vs. dedicated GPS like Garmin / Magellan)

I use my cell phone and Avenza Maps. All the FS MVUM maps are free and I have most all of the tracks (.kml rather than .gpx) for CO trails. Will happily make them available to any forum member.

And this doesnt require any sort of extra gear like antennas or dedicated devices?

I'm using an Android Tablet with an app called My Trails (I think it was $2 for the full version). It will let you download free topo maps and satellite images from their website and save to memory card (although it can take a very long time to download detailed satellite imagery). Then you can overlay live or stored GPX data (trails/way-points/etc...).

I downloaded the app for free, just to check it out, it didnt show me the trail. It showed me how to get to the trail though. Is seeing the trail a feature when you pay for the app?

Which app are you referring to? Most will require you have a GPX file saved to an accessible library (you can save your own GPX tracks, or I got most of mine from sites like Trails Offroad.

If you're asking about the free version of My Trails app, it should let you overlay GPX tracks (it does limit the number of maps you can download though). You have to load the GPX file into a specific folder and tell the app where to find it so it will show up in the track manager (where you can toggle visibility on or off).

Avenza Maps screen shot. Yellow lines are the kml tracks I mentioned previously, and provided a link to.

I have a tablet dedicated to this but I find that by the time I run a new route I've researched it so much that I almost never end up using it.

I like the OnX hunt maps, it has property lines but is an annual cost. I run it on my phone or tablet.
