Looking for a little help with this one. Have two out of town guests, my mother and her friend, who want to go see the mountains. Thinking of a trail run (Kingston? I didn't run it last weekend), but I don't have enough seats for everyone who would go with us -- my LJ has 4 seats and I'm trying to bring 5 of 6 including me.
Thought I'd throw out a feeler to see if anyone would be interested in a trail run, and perhaps providing two seats for ride-alongs.
The plan would be something scenic and moderate (at most). Other suggestions appreciated, but here are my thoughts:
Kingston Peak
Rollins Pass West (Subaru-capable)
Bill Moore Lake
Switzerland trail if I have to take my Subaru to fit everyone and decide to stay really close....

I'd be down for that.

Whoops, my mistake. I usually have Saturdays free but just double checked my calendar and am actually busy this weekend. Didn't mean to give you false hope there, hopefully someone else is able to take a couple of extra.

We are planning on spending the weekend in South Park. Not sure if Mosquito Pass would be too long of a day for you. If interested, we can look at the logistics, I am sure our daughter would like to ride with your two again. Original thoughts would be Mosquito Pass to Leadville then Weston Pass back to 285, but there are several options in the area.

I'd love to run Mosquito pass sometime. I'm not sure if that is too ambitious of a day. Obviously we'd have to make a circuit of it to recover a car at the start of the trail, but it does appear your suggestion is a closed loop.
I've never run either of these trails, and Wells says it is about 2-3 hours for Mosquito, and 2 hours for Weston. So 4-5 hours on the trail to return to the start (and car) sounds right?
I'll try to reach our guests and see how much adventure they are interested in.

If I get my exhaust tended I'd be a possible seat - low odds though.

I just went over Weston from west to east at the end of July and it's all been semi-graded and it's just a dirt road now. It's still beautiful and a great drive, but 2wd straight through.

I tried to think of a loop and knew it might be on the long side and would have some logistics to work out. We are open to ideas since we will be up there anyway. Mosquito would be the “adventure”, Weston is more of a dirt road, especially on the East side. Could always take the highway from Leadville back through Johnson Village as well. Either way, let me know.

No worries. It sounds like a great scenic trail, even if it is fast and easy. Fast might be good, if everyone starts to lag after a long day in the car, anyway.

PM'd for further detail. We're interested and have buy-in from the travelers.

Interested and I'd have one seat to contribute - but rather low odds I'll have my exhaust tended in time.

Tentative plan is to meet in Fairplay by 9:30 and run the proposed Mosquito Pass & Weston Pass loop, returning to Fairplay.

Mosquito is a great one for visitors - highest pass in Colo, lots of mining remnants, great scenery, and just enough of a 4wd/shelf road to make it standout for those not accustomed to wheeling. Glad to see its open as well.

Thanks James, this will certainly be a good test and I am more than ready to get out and clean the cobwebs from the Jeep.

Sorry, I didn't phrase it correctly, it shouldn't take two hours and is a lot of fun is what I meant. Combined with Mosquito Pass it should be an epic day. :thumb:
