View Full Version : Nankang tires...?

Does anyone have any experience or comments about Nankang tires? I am thinking of trying the AT-5 as an all-around AT-DD tire for either my truck or wagon - the price is right and for the sizes I am interested in, it only comes in an LT version with I think helps ease some concern that even if its made a bit cheap (Taiwan) there is some room for error as I would probably run P-rated (SL) tires otherwise. I probably need a set of 5 for the wagon, so the $35/tire savings adds up (if compared with BFG KO2 its over $60/tire). I don't usually skimp on tires too much - run BFG KM2 on the cj and decent Hankook ATM on the taco (albeit in P-rated SL), but from my research it seems like these could be a good deal - especially for something like the wagon that might not be relied upon as much as a DD in critical situations. Here is one review or maybe promotion:

They’re pretty okay tires, the MTs balance on the better side and the wear is slightly above average as well. I can only imagine these ATs are a far better tire on road. I’ve had a few sets of street tires on my wrx and Miata and they held up surprisingly well on autocross days. I say pull the trigger, I was pleased with my few sets!

DIn the scope of things, it wasn’t that long ago that nobody had heard of Nitto or Hankook; now, both are reasonable contenders.

You might look at the General Grabber AT-X. I put them on my truck a bit ago and have been very impressed, especially over the last couple of days. In my size, with the rebate, they were $55 less than the the KO2’s, a nice savings over the four tires.

The Hankook, Cooper and General AT tires are all about the same cost, and about $30 less than comparable BFG or Goodyear - and typically I am happy to run those on my DD truck. These Nankang are another $30 cheaper than the Hankook/Cooper/General group - and I am thinking like you mentioned, they could become a solid name in a few years. I first ran Hankook on my truck 6 or so years ago based on a recommendation and did not know the name....they have turned out great. Certainly, for the Wagon I think i will give them a try.

I have been seeing some good reviews and recommendations by people I know for Hercules tires.

One of the guys in my club down here switched to Patagonia M/T's. I've seen them in action and they are impressive, and will be a consideration for my next set. They are made in a variety of AT and MT styles, are reasonably priced and can even be picked up at Wal-Mart. Not sure of your size but for comparison purposes:

Current Wal-Mart prices for BFG KM2 vs Patagonia M/T
35x12.50R15 BFG KM2 - $239
35x12.50R15 Patagonia M/T - $155

Interesting that they make 31 and 35 inch tires for 15" wheels, but no 33" tires for 15" wheels. Maybe I'm reading the chart wrong?

like a lot of MT tires these days - 33x12.5 and not 33x10.5. I have nothing but good things to say about my BFG KM2s - and really like the changes made to the KM3s - but in reality I will buy them because they are one of the few options I can get. Toyo also has 33x10s....Guess these days that is considered a skinny tire...Wish I could still get 33x9.5x15...really like that size on older vehicles.

The tire finder button shows a 33x10x15 as well. https://www.milestartires.com/tire-search-result/?size=33100015&genericSize=33X10.00R15

It's a UTV tire, but it does say DOT approved...hmmmmm.

I didn't look closely enough to notice either of those things. I'd guess load and speed ratings are not appropriate for a Jeep if it is sold as a UTV tire.
