Trying to drive home today from Montana...not going to make it. After waiting on highway closure to open south of billings, we are waiting again near Sheridan. Road should open to Casper later this evening, but southern section to Cheyenne has no estimate for opening....

Any state highway / two-lane gravels you could take? How bad is the drifting?

No significant wind in northern Wyoming, but according to locals it was freezing rain yesterday evening...black ice everywhere. I think the wind drifts are further south and why that section is still closed. For once we are not on a tight schedule so no big deal. Enjoyed some down time wandering around billings and then sheridan. Guessing no making it past Casper tonight. Sections around Cheyenne are estimated to open Sunday mid morning.

That one reason I’m glad to be out of Wyoming.
6 month of the year you will probably gonna be snowed in somewhere....

I commute through wyo on my way to Montana 5-6 times per winter...often through the night as I work one day in Montana and the next in Colo. Always good to be prepared for a cold night in the car alongside the road due to closure...just opened the highway south to Casper.

Luckily missed the I70 closures yesterday. Intended to ski in Summit County, but kid was sick, so didn't go. I70 closed both directions due to rock slides for a long time yesterday.
Stay warm, James.

My daughter and her husband were driving from MPLS back to Longmont. Made it as far as Fort Morgan where all possible roads home were closed. Got lucky and reserved a room in Sterling (30 miles behind them). They back-tracked, but were able to call it a night.

As Jen was with me, we grabbed a very reasonable room in buffalo....as of 8am, the section from Casper to Cheyenne is still closed....

Sometime around 9am they opened the section of I25 from Casper to Cheyenne...It was a slow sketchy drive from Buffalo to Casper, then things got much better south of Casper (on the section that was closed the longest), and cruised on home fairly easily....

What was Buffalo to Casper like? Deep snow on the road? Blowing / low vis but not much on the road? Icy?
Good to be home I bet.

What was Buffalo to Casper like?
100+ miles of very slick, glazed ice and no sand. 45mph with AWD and snow tires and it was still sketchy slick with large cross-wind that felt like it would actually cause the car to slide sideways on the ice when it gusted. And one great save by Jen when it got really sideways on frozen bridge.

Glad you guys made it safely. Buffalo to Casper is bad enough to go through well over the speed limit much less at 45. I don’t miss miss traveling those roads in the winter.
