Thought it might be time to start the conversation. China Wall will be opening next month, will it be too soon to get together for the run? Assuming the “safer at home” status doesn’t cause a new spike, I could see it happening, though more of a “bring your own lunch” instead of the normal pot luck. The lay of the land leaves plenty of distancing space while not on the trail and it isn’t so technical that many people need to be out of their rigs for spotting purposes. Campers are normally spread out a bit, an evening campfire might be a bit odd, but there have already been a couple of fire bans put in place, including the current one that includes public lands, so a fire may not be an option anyway. Thoughts from the group?

As long as I haven't broke something major by then and I still have my job, I'll be game

Sure, let's get the discussion going. Last year we settled on ~June 22. Are we looking at late June again this year? I think one of our July-ish concerns is also scheduling the first of our two annual clean-up runs, but James is the guy with the ranger connections who knows when we should plan those for.

I don't think it's too soon. I'd say, right on time actually.

I'm definitely ready. My brother in law came out last time with his full size Tundra.

He saw the error in his ways and since converted to a nice JK with lockers all around. :thumb:

I'm interested, thanks for starting this!

Can you use a propane fire pit like this https://www.amazon.com/BALI-OUTDOORS-Fire-Portable-Camping/dp/B07H95NX4Z/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=propane+campfire&qid=1588395612&sr=8-10 during the fire bans? I've been considering getting one, I really don't like camping without a fire.

Supposedly that style met the guidelines in 2018 when we camped out there for the china wall run. Dave brought one. The restrictions that summer only permitted gas fire -- propane / gas cooking and fire pits. I can imagine there is a fire ban stage that doesn't permit any fire as well, though.

from Brant at USFS on 4/17:
I’ve no idea if the COVID stuff will delay anything with openings etc. Probably a little early to know what if any changes will occur. Stay tuned. I will let you know if I hear anything.

The last few years we have targeted CW run in June soon after opening, with 1st cleanup run in mid July after the 4th weekend. If anything, cleanup run are more likely to be delayed or altered with govt restrictions etc around C19. So I'd say CW in June is a great plan.

I was in the area last weekend and there was lots of dirt bike, ATV & UTV traffic, so I guess it's wheeling time for us too!

As Trent stated, the propane fire pits are normally allowed just like propane grills. Charcoal grills are not allowed.

The traffic in that area has increased steadily over the last few weekends. It may settle a bit once Clear Creek and Gilpin counties open up, at least I am hoping.

Doesn't it technically not open until June 15th?

Foot traffic is supposedly allowed anytime while vehicle traffic is not allowed until June 15th. That being said, every year we've gone to "open it up" there are plenty of vehicles already running around. One year the gate had been yanked off the swing post at the FSR 204 entrance. Of course once we get in we find where cable fences have been taken down and have tire tracks across them trying to get to walk in camp sites etc. It's just been part of the annual work day trying to patch it up for the start of the season. It's a pretty busy trail so we hit it a few times a year.
