Mudslides have forced the closure of several routes in the area on Monday afternoon, after days of significant precipitation in Ouray County.
U.S. 550 south of Ouray near mile marker 83 has been closed in both directions due to a mudslide. Imogene Pass is also closed, on the Telluride side. Black Bear Pass is also closed due to a mudslide on the Telluride side. County Road 361, to Yankee Boy Basin, is also closed due to a wash-out near Twin Falls. Another mudslide in San Miguel County near Bridal Veil Falls has forced the closure of the Via Ferrata, near Telluride.
The mudslide on U.S. 550 is being cleared by Colorado Department of Transportation crews this afternoon, according to spokeswoman Lisa Schwantes. Debris is being cleared from the roadway about eight miles south of Ouray, near Ironton.
"This is the result of heavy rains that we’ve received," said Schwantes, who advised anyone traveling in the area to be alert and ready for delays. "Just be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to stop if you see a rockslide, mudslide, rock fall."
More precipitation is forecasted through Tuesday in the region, according to the National Weather Service. There's a 70 percent chance of rain forecast for Ridgway tonight and an 80 percent chance in Ouray.
