View Full Version : CJ5 San Juans trip

FINOCJ
August 6th, 2020, 05:54 PM
Did 3 days of wheeling (and one day of hiking) in the San Juans with some fellow early cj5 jeepers. A couple of us stayed in Ouray, and a few stayed in Silverton. All the cj's were between 1966-1971 with the odd fire Dauntless V6 engines. Most of these jeeps have been kept pretty darn stock with a few limited mods (probably more stock than mine as I run 33s and have a locker). Pulling a Jim here, and will add some pics over the next day or so.

Day 1 - up Engineer Pass from 550 near Ouray to Lake City, then over Cinnamon Pass to Animas Forks and Silverton. A very long day with some crowded trail on Engineer and mechanical issue on a jeep (field replaced a mechanical fuel pump). Going up Engineer Pass had a bit more rock and obstacles than I remembered - the east side was not really a favorite, although the late afternoon into evening climb up the east side of Cinnamon Pass was gorgeous.

Day 2 - Up Corkscrew Gulch from Ironton on 550, then over to Hurricane Pass, lunch at Lake Como, up over California Pass and down California Gulch to near Animas Forks, then up Placer Gulch, and down Picayune Gulch and down to Silverton. I thought the morning climb up Corkscrew was fabulous - the busy middle section feels just like the day before - but the trip up Placer and then down Picayune was again fabulous. Would definitely run it again.

Some of the group stayed for a couple more days of wheeling - sounds like they had a small mechanical issue today, but I think all is good. We had to bail early as we have a Colorado River float trip starting Sat.

I added one image in the above post - its visible to me, but not sure if its visible to others....If it is, that is a pretty easy way for me to post some of these via Google function (where all my photos are automatically backed up), otherwise I have to go back to my usual remote hosting site.

heading up engineer pass from the west end? Definitely better than the east end towards Lake city....We did the whole 70 mile "alpine loop" hitting all 3 towns (Ouray, Lake City and Silverton) and the 2 4wd passes (Engineer and Cinnamon) plus Red Mt pass on 550. LONG long day in the old jeeps, plus some extra delay with fuel pump issue etc....We met at 10am just north of Ouray, and I made it back to Ouray at 9pm - 10 hours of it on trail and the last hour on the hwy.

I can see all but two. Those two show and a circle with a minus sign in them on Chrome.
See none on Safari.

Yup...this is what happens with google - it works on droid devices and some browsers, but then it doesn't work on other stuff, or whatnot....As long as everything and everyone is google, its all good, but google doesn't play well with others. I normally use beaming pix as my remote host site (run by an early cj5 jeeper), but it won't load anything directly from google either, so I have to download to my PC and then upload to B-pix (and it has an auto-downsize option for web forum posting), which is easy from my PC, but not so easy from my phone....

You should be able to, specifically, "share" those items as "public" (no login needed). I don't know google's terminology, but the function is available.

I do that when I copy the link - make available to anyone with the link....but when it get filtered through various forum's 'insert image' icon using a url, stuff gets goofy. XenForo forum software (earlycj5.com) definitely doesn't like Google links - not sure what we use here, but its similar. I think they work better at Old Willys Forum, which is also XenForo with Dragonbyte add-ons (? - whatever that means)....anyway, every year or so, I try again - mostly when I don't have access to my PC for a bit - and then give up.

Where is the "Engineer Mountain Road" - where it has the hard rock cut-out to drive on?

(and yes... all of the photos... wanted :D)

That sign is basically at the western end of Engineer Pass (18) where it intersects hwy 550....
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ouray,+CO/@37.9876291,-107.646686,2000m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x873f1f7caf7386f3:0x9003c 80400295bdd!8m2!3d38.0227716!4d-107.6714487?hl=en

The section of rock cut/shelf road is not far up from the western terminus and before the junction with Poughkeepsie Gulch Trail (which is now the top of my San Juan bucket list trails). From Google maps - guessing its right about here:

Thx James. Both times on Engineer I've gone down to Animas Forks and have not continued west on Engineer. When I was on Engineer recently I saw the locked gate for Poughkeepsie and asked the gas station clerk in Silverton why it was locked. The comment was that there was avalanche debris and people started driving around the debris / making new trail and the gates were locked. She indicated there was question if it'll open again (ever).

I could see a multi-day trek to explore more trails in the area (that I've yet to travel).

I'd say the western end of engineer is the better portion - other than the high pass vantage points. Certainly the western side is much more interesting than the eastern side. Poughkeepsie Gulch was open and quite busy last week when we where there....heard some good stories around the campgrounds etc about how hard it was....kind of like fishing stories I guess....Although uphill has the right of way, the trail direction is recommended to run downhill. I could see going up Corkscrew and then down Poughkeepsie and out to 550 on Engineer - would make a nice loop.

no - we didn't have any flatfenders.....guessing that is the cj2a group? we ecj5-ers aren't cool enough to hang out with the flat fender groups - some of them get a bit grumpy when a round fender tags along...:lmao:
Guessing I know a few of those guys in passing - most of the drivetrain components are the same so there is a lot of cross-talk.
