A few "old jeep" questions

I was with a client today and the question was posed to me - we're thinking about buying an old jeep (up to the 70's) for use on the property and possibly take into the hunting areas for easy removal of game - something faster than the "Gator". These folks are in southern Wyoming. I asked about elevation having carb jetting issues in mind - 6000 to 9000 ft was the reply. Also was a comment - we'd really prefer diesel as that's the fuel we have most of on the property. The reason for "old" is for easy diagnosis & repair (scant few electrical items to fail).

OK, old for reduced electronics easy of diagnosis / field repair. Diesel a preference.

What year did Jeeps switch from C frame jeeps to fully boxed frames?

What are the odds of finding a jeep with a diesel with scant few electronics? (this does not say 'old' - just scant few electronics)

Very few old Jeeps had a diesel option. It's almost impossible to find one. I can't remember when they went to a boxed frame for sure but it might have been in the 70s. As far as electronics, stay in the 70s or older to avoid them.

Boxed frames came in 1976 - also when the frame went from parallel 'ladder' style to stepping out wider in the rear....the only diesel offered in the cj was the Perkins 192, and it would have at latest, been offered no more recently than 1966 (when the v6 came out). The 192 was not that common back in the day - I think because the F134 gas engine was pretty much a low rpm, almost diesel like engine in its own right. Both engines only put out about 70hp (gross!) or so - although I am sure the diesel had a bit of torque. There was one for sale around the region not that long ago - it pops up every so often - not sure if its changing hands each time, or if the same owner just keeps testing the waters....I have not seen one in person, but they are interesting and a number of members of the earlycj5 group like them. I think they like them as much for the anomaly as anything else - from what I gather, parts are hard to come - sometimes having to find old industrial applications like forklifts and whatnot to get parts....

PS - if it were me, and I was looking for a farm or hunting jeep - I'd try to find a cj8 (scrambler) for the extra bed capacity. You ain't fitting an elk in the back of a cj5 or even a cj7. The 4cyl offered in the cj8 was the GM 'iron duke' 2.5L, and I think it was upgraded to a fuel injected version at some point (certainly by 1989 as I had one in my YJ)....the fuel injection in that was solid, and if the tire size was kept reasonable, it was a solid engine....But I am guessing the cj8 - which I think ended production in 1984? - was probably pre-fuel injection. I think a slightly modern fuel injected 2.5L 4 cyl out of a YJ would be a sweet swap into an old flatfender cj....but I digress....

CJ8 was 80-86. But that's when they started with all the computer junk on the carb.

One more....for an older style cj - this one is a pretty sweet deal. V6 and minimal rust...was sent to me by another ecj5 owner in Woodland Park as he thought it looked like mine.....pretty darn close.

Just in case a diesel cj5 was still interesting...here is later (78 cj5) with all the goodies and a swapped mercedes diesel....a connection is selling this....I was rather surprised as he put in some time and effort and was using it as the family camping vehicle....but then he spent the last few years getting a old 40s flatfender up and running....
