View Full Version : Noisy heim joints?

Recently installed an Advance Adapters SYE, Adams DC driveshaft, and built my own adjustable rear UCA's. The UCA's were made using chromoly 3/4" heims on the axle end and chromoly/ poly joints on the frame end. Everything has been installed and the kinks worked out but I'm hearing a clunking sound when going over bumps at low speeds. I've triple checked that everything is tight/ has no play in it but can't seem to track down the sound. Only thing I can think of is that the new heim joints are causing it?

The previous owner of my Jeep replaced the drag link - steering box greasable joint with a heim joint when they installed the lift along with a drop pitman arm. I had some clunking coming from that heim joint that took me a while to find. In my case, the nut holding the ball stud onto the pitman arm had worked itself just a tiny bit loose. When the Jeep was loaded down and driving you could hear and feel it wallowing in the pitman arm hole just a bit as steering passed over center. After tightening it down really good-n-tight, I haven't had problems with it again and no longer notice the clunking I had before. Note that the nut was tight enough that if I jacked up the frontend and tried to turn the wheel there would not be any noticeable movement or clunk. I had to have weight on the wheels to provide enough resistance to cause the ball stud to wiggle.

Tightness was the first thing I checked and it hasn't made a difference if I went 15 uggie duggies or just hand tight with a ratchet. Im thinking I might need to make sure the joint isn't making contact with the control arm bracket.
