my wife's JKU has been making strange noise in 4x4. I check all the u-joints and they look fine. I thought it sounded like the gears were damaged, but I popped the cover today and they look just fine. it's a tick tick tick sound that is rotational (increases with speed), only in 4x4 (low or high, but can be heard best in high), and only with torque. the video isn't great, but you can hear it a little.

any thoughts? 4x4 seems to work just fine and there's no big pops or jumps like a stretched t-case chain would produce. so I'm a little at a loss. the only thing I can think of is that the joint where the front drive shaft connects to the t-case is old. the Jeep is a 2017 w/90k on the clock. all original drive train parts.

click the picture to see the video...you can hear it best around the 9-10 second mark.

Did you check the front driveshaft Rzeppa joint?

Is it lifted? If so did you replace the front drive shaft? Sounds like the cv joint on the front drive shaft. Had to replace mine last year.

we are still rocking your 2" pucks, Tom! :)

and no, we never did anything w/the front drive shaft. is the Rzeppa joint that goofy looking thing at the rear near the tcase?

Yes and it's also the cv joint I replaced. They are the same thing. My link has photos. Pretty easy job to replace it the way I did. Typically the boot is torn on JKs and it's a dead giveaway.

I'd be happy to help you check it out.

thanks Tom. I'm gonna crawl under there tomorrow. kicking myself now for pulling the dif cover, haha. I found a guy on Craigslist with a low-mileage drive shaft, but it's from a 2-door. I think it should fit, and our lease is up in a couple months. so hopefully I can snag it for cheap and get away without having to spend for the upgrade.

Sounds like a plan. If it doesn't work out 158.99 for the part I used is not bad.

yup, the joint is toast. you can see all the grease flung up on the underbelly. there's a guy in the Springs who has a low-mileage shaft that is complete for $120 that I think I might grab. easy in and out. I watched the video on how to do the Teraflex one, but it looks a little more involved for what I want to do since we're trading it in soon.
