Been exploring the trail maps and looking at some cool stuff. One that's on the top of my list is Engineers pass. Gauging interest.

Its a nice trail, but if you are down that way there are a bunch more that are good as well. Note Engineers is only about 1/2 day run.

What Tom says.

I was there last year. I could go again - unknown if those dates would sway me - too early in my scheduling. I'd be a low maybe.

Low simmer on interest. I'd like to get back down that way for several days. Engineer pass isn't high on my list, but there are lots of trails in the area that are on the list.

I'd like to do every single trail in the area. Dates are a touch early for me, but I am interested. If it was a month or two later I'd be a solid yes but I still may be able to make it work.

I appreciate the input. I'm definitely trying to spend the weekend out there to do some camping as well so doing more trails is desirable. I took a stab at the date because I'm not sure what is acceptable timing.

Spending the weekend there makes it even more appealing. I was already thinking if others did a day out there I might go early and stay late.

Definitely would like to do this area again, was there a couple of summers ago around that time camped for a week. It was great, Black Bear(accident)and Poughkeepsie(avalanche) weren't open all the way beginning to end but it was still a blast. Side note there is a great brewery in Ouray called Grumpy Old Man.

Love the area, would definitely be interested.
Poughkeepsie and Imogene I didn't get to do last time.

Ouray called Grumpy Old Man
Finally a brewery that speaks to my soul.

The list grows
I like where this is going.

Imogene was closed when I visited last year, so I didn't get to run it. I ran Poughkeepsie. It was fun.

I went down there last year. I wanted to do the area earlier in the season (June 8th) because to see what it was like before all the snow was melted away. Obviously didn't do every trail but, I was surprised to be able to do the ones we planned to do. I think if you go around July 25th you will have every trail at your disposal. I wish I could join you but it's in the middle of our 2 week vacation together. And Wheeling is not on our agenda.. Hope you go. I feel there is no better place in our State to spend time in.

I'm in, been wanting to do a weekend of camping/wheeling in this area for a while.

Man I would love to go if it was earlier in July! It's just my wife only has a certain number of vacations and doesn't want to spend all of them camping. So on the weeks she has off we do our vacations more the way she and I both would enjoy. I have May 31st through August 9th to fit in my offroad exertions. I have an event with Overland Bound scheduled for August 5th-8th and we have the last 2 weeks in July to maybe go somewhere with a beach involved.

I would say that the 2nd weekend in July nearly every trail should be clear and the only closures would be causeed by un-safe wash outs, where they have had multiple accidents. Like they had on Imogene Pass last year while I was down there. To be honest once you've gone down there you will want to go as much as you can. It's a special place.

I might try to put something together for that weekend (wait and see kind of thing?)

I would run Engineer from Ouray side to Lake City , because of the shelf road is a gradual up hill in that direction and having the right away is a good idea. The other reason is doing Mineral creek in the opposite directions gets very sketchy. We did part of Engineer last trip and came back to 550 via Mineral Creek , it was a blast but pucker , pucker at the obstacles.

With the recent recovery, the damage that the 4runner sustained, and it now being in the shop getting repairs I've gotten some headspace around the intended use. I'm feeling less comfortable with the idea of offroading a 30k vehicle in favor of something like an XJ that won't be a daily driver so we may want to push this out a bit or I'll wait to do more trail rides in the future when things are squared away.

I missed the details, what kind of damage does your 4runner have?

Yeah there's a story there I completely missed too.
Hope the 4Runner is OK!

Trent got it, I banged up some body panels on some weekday wheeling shenanigans. Did about $7000 worth of damage to the exterior panels.

You want a 1993 Wrangler you can beat the hell out of?

Also I hope you got some photos before you took it in because I don't even know what $7000 worth of damage even looks like

Have you seen the price of new cars these days? $7000 sounds like a plastic bumper and maybe a body panel over a wheel arch.

`bout sums it up!

Bumpers nowadays have 35 sensors and 15 cameras - crazyness - not just a couple wires hanging out for 20 cent right-turn/left-turn/running lights.

In the case of the new Mercedes I lightly backed into a few years ago at a gas station, it looks like a single 5" dent in a quarter panel....

In the case of the new Mercedes I lightly backed into a few years ago at a gas station, it looks like a single 5" dent in a quarter panel with a small scratch...I think insurance claimed 9k or so to replace the panel and color match....
